@wallaceme @Unusual_Times @paullewismoney It is a genuinely surprisingly ignorant comment from Lewis. He seems unaware that VAT is cost to your customers if they are not themselves VAT registered, so it constrains what you can charge them. Literally anyone who has set up and grown a small business would know this.

@Unusual_Times @paullewismoney He may very well be - but that doesn’t mean someone automatically knows how to run a business. For eg while there is admin in being VAT-registered, that isn’t the main reason chunks of the market prefer not to tip over the threshold.

@martinboon Lilico is also objectively wrong. The current interest rates are usurious, and the freezing of repayment thresholds means they much of that interest is likely to be paid via a multi-decade income tax surcharge. Lilico is characteristically ill-informed.

@aedmans There may, of course, be good answers to both questions. Given your demand that Reeves use precisely the right language to describe her title, I'm sure you'll provide them.

@aedmans Precision is important, so can you clarify how you became "British Squad Champion"? I don't recall any competition by that name. While we're at it, can you clarify what you say the "London Junior Champion" is? I thought you only won the U16 title, not the top-tier U18 title.

I played for the England junior chess team, was British Squad Champion and London Junior Champion, but had never heard of Rachel Reeves, even though she was only a year above me. Newspaper claims that she was British U14 girls' champion are false; she came 26th out of 34 in that tournament. Yet these claims have been widely repeated due to the narrative fallacy - the appealing story that she'd be a great Chancellor because chess teaches: ♙ the discipline to evaluate risks before making a move ♘ the ability to maintain a consistent long-term strategy rather than lurch between short-term fixes ♗ the realism to play the position on the board rather than misrepresent it or blame others for it ♖ the judgement to play the strongest move, not the flashiest one ♕ the capacity to think several moves ahead and foresee second-order effects If chess really shaped her approach, it’s hard to see it on the board.
Rachel Reeves@RachelReevesMP

My dad taught me how to play chess at the age of 7 and since then I've had the chess bug. Chess has taught me so many things which are useful in politics from being strategic to giving me that competitive streak.

Interesting theory. Churchill? Apparently not. The Duke of Wellington? Palmerston? Alec Douglas Home? How about excluding bigots who don’t know any history, instead.
Gareth Davies@GarethDavies007

@Dannythefink Nusrat shouldn’t be an MP Only British people with a demonstrable, uninterrupted ancestral line to Britain should be allowed to be MPs This isn’t controversial & is the norm virtually everywhere except the West We couldn’t do it in Nusrat’s country of birth, Pakistan, could we

@wallaceme This is just dreadful management. There is literally no reason to release slots at that time, which will offer no impediment to bots but is very inconvenient to real people. The problem *may* be hard to solve, but this is obvious low-hanging fruit.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the DVSA releases new slots at 6am on Mondays, so would-be drivers have to sit up at 6am only to see scalpers scoop up all the slots in milliseconds.

It seems the DVSA website is *still* overwhelmed by automated booking bots. It's genuinely the case that lots of people are finding the only way to get a test slot is to pay the scalpers £££ to buy a slot on the grey market. Crazy mess.
Harry Wallop@hwallop

Trying to book a driving test for my 17yr-old. And Oh. My. God. It's as broken as everyone warned me. Why? Seriously – why? Why is @DVLAgovuk still on its knees 5yrs after Covid. But the @HM_Passport back up & running smoothly? Has anyone done a clear-eyed analysis?

@BarbaraRich_law @Grant2982888331 @sarafina_mucci @Elaine_Ellinger Barbara (an English barrister) is obviously correct about how calls to the bar works. The OP obviously (a) knows nothing about this and (b) isn’t going to let her ignorance get in the way of her agenda. The OP also can’t count. There are far more than 45 people on the list.

Call to the Bar – Trinity Term, 25 July 2024 lincolnsinn.org.uk/news/call-to-t… Asking why a prestigious British legal institution would have a call list that is 80% (36 out of 45) Islamic in a country where Muslims are roughly 6.5% of the population is not only logical — it’s essential. Does Lincoln’s Inn operate under DEI recruitment policies? Are children from England’s historic population now being overlooked in favour of more politically protected identities? Are the children of significant donors given preferential treatment? Are interviewers so afraid of bias accusations that they favour “safe” minority candidates? Such disproportionate representation raises serious concerns—not only about academic objectivity but also about the long-term impact on the British legal system. Islamic principles are inconsistent with English law. What happens when loyalties conflict with constitutional and secular norms? We’ve already heard Sadiq Khan—a British lawyer and Mayor of London—state that religion is an immutable characteristic and cannot be changed - this is an Islamic principle, not a British one. [The Guardian, Aug 8, 2024] If any readers can answer these questions, please comment below. What is going on here?

@Kasparov63 This is insane, even in its own terms. It means that if you’re eg Vietnam there is nothing you can do to reduce these tariffs, other than to sell less to the USA. Which defeats the point of reducing the tariffs in the first place. It literally makes no sense.

@Kyochi_Myogo @JohnHundeslit @IHoward1749 @RDesignator I *think* she’s making the anodyne point that power relations change over time, but dressing it up in jargon to try to make it appear to be a much more sophisticated point. I agree this suggests she has no interest in persuading anyone - she’s just posing.

@JohnHundeslit @IHoward1749 @RDesignator It is undoubtedly bad writing. It may (or may not) reflect unclear thinking. But if she can’t express herself clearly, I don’t see why we should give her the benefit of the doubt.

@DanicaPriest @MichaelDnes1 No, you weren’t. Because you didn’t read the initial article and jumped to the conclusion it was about a theme park. It wasn’t. But our subsequent exchanges were unbelievably tedious and I’m not going to waste any more time on you. So go on believing whatever you like.

@theroyalfactor @TLRailUK Website currently says there is a “flood”. Presumably the train enters submarine-mode, like James Bond’s Lotus, as it passes en route to Blackfriars…

Dear @TLRailUK, on Monday, City Thameslink station was shut due to a ‘points failure’. Yesterday it was shut due to a ‘burst water main’. Today it’s shut because of a ‘landslip’. What will you think of tomorrow?! Can I offer ‘Daleks’? Thank you.

@DanicaPriest @MichaelDnes1 No, that one is not an assumption. But you’ve very eloquently demonstrated the OP’s point that some environmental campaigners do not care about the societal costs of restricting development next to major infrastructure. So, I guess, maybe this exchange has had a point.

@DanicaPriest @MichaelDnes1 I can see you’re fond of making assumptions. And incidentally I absolutely can say I like nature *and* people should have housing in Ebbsfleet next to a major rail station. It’s a question of balance. That’s literally the point of the thread that you didn’t read.

@craigmorrison22 @MichaelDnes1 I thought you were leaving? You said ‘bye’ so I assumed you were done debating but here we are… sounds like you were just trying to shut down accountability. 😬 you can’t say you like nature and think an SSSI should be built over. Also SSSIs don’t block housing on their own

@DanicaPriest @MichaelDnes1 I doubt you’ll engage with the substance of anything anyone says on this issue, based on your behaviour so far. But if you can identify where the assertion that “that Natural England blocked housing because residents objected” appears in the original thread, feel free.

@DanicaPriest @MichaelDnes1 So the SSSI didn’t block housing in Ebbsfleet? Was that observation - i.e. the point of the thread - false? I like nature btw. At no point have I expressed any view - at all - on the actual merits of the argument, or any “narrative”. You’re just too busy ranting to notice.

@craigmorrison22 @MichaelDnes1 Nope the post and yours are in bad faith and now you are walking away because I proved with evidence that you were wrong. You took a random guy on twitter’s word for something without fact checking first because it fits your ‘nature = bad’ narrative.
