With another language, your world expands, your mind grows, your heart opens. Without another language, your outlook is insular, you're left with what you know, your horizons are limited. Not only are languages for everyone, but everyone benefits in ways they never anticipated.

If Mandarin gets more young people excited about languages in school, great; let's ride that wave. But let’s also stop treating Latin as a museum piece. Beyond the declensions lies a powerhouse for critical thinking and cultural literacy. All school languages shape modern minds.

In a world where understanding matters more than ever, learning another language is far more important than remembering vocabulary & grammar. It's about seeing another point of view, & making new human connections. It's a bunch of skills that makes you better at whatever you do.

UK schools! It's time for our annual celebration of language learning. We'd love to see a video of your pupils speaking or singing in a language they have learnt at school or their home language. Please share using #CelebrateSpeaking.

#WhyLearnGerman? To appreciate the unique ways the language and culture expresses luck! In German, a lucky person might be called a ‘Glückspilz’, or lucky mushroom. It reflects how luck has found them as quickly as mushrooms grow. It's even inspired this sweet garden decoration!

I didn’t learn languages just to collect certificates. I learned languages for the friendships, the (mis)adventures, the roadside chats, the families, the feeling of belonging somewhere unexpected. Every new language throws open the door to a life you wouldn’t otherwise live.

Each time you learn a new language, you discover a tiny bit more of the world. You meet another people on their terms. You experience moments you never knew you were missing. You realise that your worldview is just one of many. You get the chance to live a fuller and richer life.
