@EdwinECabreraU @Gonzalolazzari @icardreyes @joylazarusl panamaendirecto.com @ARCA_Media 97.7FM #PanamaEnDirecto YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=kOjLXD…

Thrilled to share that my paper with @MattGrossmann and Caleb Lucas is now out at American Politics Research. In it, we introduce CongressData, a novel repository of 1,300+ variables on the US Congress. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15…

I am very happy to share that our paper, “Ideological Alignment and Evidence-Based Policy Adoption,” is now published in the American Economic Review (#AER). This is a hugely ambitious project that has taken more than four years of work together with an amazing team of co-authors. We conducted a nationwide #RCT involving over 5,000 real local politicians, as well as national think tanks, newspapers, and a leading global academic institution, to answer a simple but very important question: does the political “colour” of the messenger influence policy implementation? One of the central challenges of the #evidence-based policy agenda is turning evidence into actual policy. From my experience in politics, this is far from straightforward: evidence has limited value if it does not translate into policies that improve people’s lives. Why is it so difficult to persuade policymakers to adopt policies with strong empirical backing? If the evidence is there, why are these policies so rarely implemented? 🔬 In our study, we address this by sending identical information about an evidence-based policy to local policymakers, introducing variation only in the #messenger of the policy: a non-ideological research institution versus think tanks and newspapers with clear ideological leanings. The policy itself is a recommendation - strongly supported by evidence- that improving a municipality’s Wikipedia page increases tourism. We find that policy adoption increases by 65% when the information comes from a source perceived as ideologically aligned with the policymaker. In contrast, ideologically opposed institutions have no effect. Publishing in what is arguably the world’s leading academic journal is a dream for any economist. For me - having stepped away from academia for politics - the joy is even greater. 🙏 I am deeply grateful to all my incredble co-authors for their generosity of offering me the opportunity to share this project with them, and for everything I have learned throughout this process. I also want to thank all the collaborators and RAs that have contributed, as well as across institutions, including eldiario.es, El Mundo, Alternativas, FAES, and FEMP, as well as the support from the Social Research Call of La Caixa and the Wikimedia Foundation. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10… @IEuniversity @iespega @EnricoLetta @manuelmunizv @Borjamonde @JuanSantalo

#Hungary | The architect of Europe's "illiberal democracy" has been voted out, despite #Trump's support & U.S. @VP visiting Budapest and documented Russian interference. This matters beyond #Hungary. @PM_ViktorOrban was Putin's closest EU ally and the model for MAGA's vision of governance. Combined with recent setbacks for the populist right in #France, #Italy, and #Slovenia, the result suggests the illiberal project inside democratic systems has a ceiling when voters mobilize.

I normally don't post about European elections. But the potential defeat of Viktor Orbán in #Hungary is important. Orbán, in power since 2010, has dismantled most democratic accountability mechanisms, yet voters seem to have voted overwhelmingly for change!

Polling stations have now closed in Hungary. I fielded a pre-election survey among Hungarians up until yesterday (1065 respondents). When asked if they had to choose between Tisza and Fidesz to form the next government, 57% selected Tisza, and the rest Fidesz (the current govt).

Nature meta-research project puts claims in social-science papers. I'm interested in Econ and Psych so I focused on that: Econ had about the same rate of "not reproducible" analyses as Psych and a worse rate then Political Science. nature.com/articles/d4158…

These were mayoral 🇫🇷 elections, so any national extrapolation is of course hazardous. But if you go by voting in towns with > 100,000 population, one cautious conclusion is this : the broad non-populist centre can hold

How can the EU still operate as a Union when one of its members systematically sabotages it from within? That Orbán’s people feed Moscow every detail of EU Council meetings surprises no one. Yet this breach of loyal cooperation is so grave it endangers the Union itself. The EU can’t expel a rebellious member state but its members could at least trigger the sanctioning mechanisms that already exist.
Donald Tusk@donaldtusk

The news that Orbán’s people inform Moscow about EU Council meetings in every detail shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. We’ve had our suspicions about that for a long time. That’s one reason why I take the floor only when strictly necessary and say just as much as necessary.
