I am founding a new school of philosophy: it is called Correct Theory and its principal tenet is that it’s a magical world, ol’ buddy.

Ban everyone who closes their shades during air travel. With a few exceptions, they’re not worthy.

@Robotbeat Cannot argue with that, but I'd also like to put in an honorable mention for the one that happened in my lifetime: 1989-11-09

@joebarnard @DrChrisCombs IFT-2 was a *test* launched in the middle of development; Artemis 1 was “we guarantee this will work” after all the *testing* was done. These are not the same!

Lmao this is the most Eric Berger of all Eric Berger takes I’ve been very positive in my comments on Starship IFT-2 but SLS sent Orion around the Moon on its first flight while Starship just barely made it past the Gulf of Mexico, why force this comparison?

I wrote about this weekend's Starship launch, and tried to explain why it was a remarkable success despite the outward appearance of failure. arstechnica.com/space/2023/11/…

@bertil_hatt @duncancampbell Not at all obvious that it will be more expensive to do a simple synthesis of methane from water and carbon dioxide, than to collect, purify and break down a jumble of ag waste and dirt

@croald @duncancampbell Many of those can be synthesised with food & agro waste and recycling. There will be a need for virgin products but I’m not sure how large the demand will justify setups like that.

Synthetic fuels bets require you to believe either: 1) electricity transmission and distribution are going to bottleneck energy 2) electrification of end uses (EVs, heat pumps, etc) won’t penetrate very far I think the 2nd is bunk but the first could become true.
Isaiah Taylor - making nuclear reactors@isaiah_p_taylor

Today I'm excited to unveil Valar Atomics! Valar is my master plan to make energy 10x cheaper in 10 years by pulling oil and gas out of thin air with nuclear fission. This will untether energy from climate and politics, fuel American industry, and unlock a new era of growth

@Cererean Usually people “giving” to campaigns that wildly exceed their goals are actually just buying (preordering) whatever the campaign is making/selling. You might as well ask why people “give” to a store even after it’s made payroll for the month

@pythonrocksnake @Cererean If all you want is land, I suspect it would be easy to get permission from the Canadian government for a generous chunk of uninhabited high Arctic islands, that would in all ways be more habitable than Mars

Dumping brine slowly in the open ocean shouldn't have environmental consequences right? I mean, you're taking it beyond the environment. There's nothing out there but sea and birds and fish. And 20,000 tonnes of concentrated brine.

@Cererean The key is always “how slowly?” But I’d bet the real question is “how are you getting the brine to open ocean in the first place?”
