NEW: Ron DeSantis releases the five major components of his Save Our Homes property tax plan: - Homestead Exemptions: Exempts the first $250,000 of a homestead’s value from taxation, though it also requires a schedule to eventually phase them out in full

- Local Services: Requires local governments to use remaining property taxes solely for core public needs, such as public safety, education, infrastructure and natural resources

- Business Taxes: Limits future property tax assessments on businesses and creates a more stable tax environment for local businesses

- Residency Requirements: Requires anyone who establishes Florida residency after Jan. 1, 2027, to maintain Florida residency for up to five years before receiving the increased homestead exemption

- Trust Fund: Establishes a state trust fund to provide grants to local governments to help with the continuation of core local services DeSantis will be the 2028 favorite if he can get this done.

Here in Alachua County (FL) the population increased only ~23000, about 5%, between 2020 and 2026, but the county’s income and budget when up 70%. This was driven by increased property values resulting in higher property taxes. This excess didn’t go to the declining public schools, road repairs, salary increases, but to new, wasteful woke projects and programs.

Stupid question. I mean, I know I’m a bleeding heart liberal, but how does the state of Florida expect to pay for necessary services with less tax dollars coming in?

When Gov. DeSantis leaves office, Florida will need a leader who can successfully run the state and build on our progress. @LtGovJayCollins has the proven capability to keep Florida moving forward.

@GovRonDeSantis Needs to happen. Sky rocketing property values and the rising tax assessments that go with them only penalize homeowners (many on SS and pensions) and enrich greedy and wasteful local governments. Meanwhile, here in Alachua County, roads go unrepaired for years.

Today in Tampa, I outlined the Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes plan that will eliminate taxes on homesteads.  Property tax revenue collected by local governments has nearly doubled in the past seven years (from $32 billion to $60 billion) and is expected to reach an astounding $83 billion by 2032. Florida homeowners need relief. Now is the time to stand up for taxpayers, enact a historic reform, and save the home of every Floridian.

@florida_grand Jay Collins has my vote in the primary, but now that Trump has endorsed Byron Donalds he’ll be a shoe-in. Too bad. Florida could’ve had another real, fearless, MAGA conservative leader like DeSantis has been for us. Instead we’ll have to settle for a lightweight.
