Today is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. If you don’t know the story, Mary appeared there in 1858 to a peasant girl named Bernadette. It’s worth noting that, in most apparitions, Mary appears to “nobodys.” Maybe that’s because the world would have seen as one when she was a young woman…little did the world know! Among other things, Mary told Bernadette to “drink from the spring and wash in it.” The only glaring problem was that there was no spring nearby. She pointed to a place on the ground as she spoke, and Bernadette, in obedience, dug away at the mud to wash in it. Immediately, water started flowing that, to this day, produces about 27,000 gallons a day. Millions have visited since to bathe in the spring, which God has used to work miracles. 70 of them have been thoroughly investigated with strict scientific criterion—which includes zero medical explanation—and include cancer patients whose tumors vanished instantly, paralytics who could suddenly walk, the blind seeing, and cases of tuberculosis and MS instantly “clearing up.” But there are countless more miracle stories that haven’t undergone investigation, and walls are lined with the crutches of people who left them behind. But a little known fact about this miraculous, healing spring is that it was located where the town dump was….which was also where criminals would do their business. How fitting that THAT would be the spot God would pick for one of the most life giving pilgrimage sites in the world—a site marked by the sign of a pure spring of water that millions have bathed in. What part of your life or heart do you feel is a “dump”? That place of hurt, pain, disappointment, and wounding? Maybe that’s exactly the spot God has chosen to turn into a spring of blessings. Maybe that’s precisely the site of your super power, and the place where your future glory will shine most brightly in heaven. Jesus’ risen body still bore the wounds in his hands, feet, and side, but a new light shone through them, and hope for the world.
