Looks like the government might finally be caving to the pressure myself, others on the crossbench & especially Australians in communities across the country have been putting on them to tax gas companies making wartime profits. Australians are already paying more on petrol & we shouldn’t be paying more on beer excise than the government gets for Petroleum Resources Rent Tax (PRRT). It’s encouraging to see Treasury modelling changes to the way gas is taxed. We should have a flat 25% tax on all gas exports & enough gas exports diverted into an east coast gas reservation & we need both now. abc.net.au/news/2026-03-2…

@JaneCaro I don’t know, a couple of months ago the biggest US news stories were people getting shot by ICE while obersving or protesting in Minnesota. There have also been many mass demonstrations against the Trump admin that just aren’t getting the same news or social media coverage.

Dear Americans, The mea culpas are fine but what are you going to do to get rid of the orange buffoon & his gang of grifters? One reason no ally is helping Trump against Iran is cos they know their citizens would be marching in the streets in fury if they tried. Where are you?

@TheKouk Wild to be considering this before WFH and slashing public transport fares. We are governmed by complete idiots.

Cutting the petrol excise would be a horrible decision. A huge cost to the budget; pumping cash into the economy right now is not what is needed. The fiscal tightening that is underway needs to be built upon, not sabotaged for populist gumph

If you're filling up the car for the week ahead, we’ve got your back. Our anti-price gouging laws are in force. It means fuel prices must be published in advance & can't increase again that day.

@JEChalmers Do demand reduction with WFH and encourage or support lower transport fares. You don’t have enough levers to pull on the supply side. Stop with the delay on demand.

We know Australians are concerned about petrol and diesel prices and supply and that’s why we are working with industry and regulators to make sure there’s enough fuel and that the suppliers and retailers aren’t doing the wrong thing by people.

Australia was not consulted before Trump/Netanyahu started bombing Iran. Now, with all other US allies, we are paying the price. RBA likely to raise interest rates on Tuesday as inflation counter measure; we face petrol/diesel rationing to maintain domestic agriculture/supply.

Opinion | "An extended conflict will produce another round of energy inflation that will hammer the economy and force up interest rates. It is yet again proving that the US is the country doing Australia the most economic harm." crikey.com.au/2026/03/09/ant…

People who study the behavioral sciences don’t do conspiracies because we understand how terrible humans are at coordination, even when they’re doing it openly and within one institution. That said: Trump had Epstein killed bc Epstein had tales to trade.

@ALeighMP Voters wont’ care. You are in power now and they punish the party in power when COL rises. Move to WFH and encourage 50c public transport fares nationwide if you don’t want to give back your record number of seats. You can’t clip farm your way out of high fuel and food costs.

Under the Coalition, 6 out of 8 refineries went out of business. Not exactly a masterclass in fuel security. We’ve been doing the opposite: stockpiling billions of litres of fuel, shining a weekly spotlight on petrol prices, & backing EVs andrewleigh.com/speech_fuel_se… #auspol

@TMFScottP They should make the fed APS WFH and encourage WFH from state public sectors and unis. State govs should follow QLD’s lead with 50c PT fares ASAP. Should be done as cost of living relief and efforts to curb metro demand to help support regional food production.

The issue isn't that inflation might hit the high 4s because of Iran. It's that it's already 3.8%, meaning the Iran shock just makes things even worse. I *still* haven't seen a single policy from the government aimed at reducing pressure on inflation. They are MIA.

It is not a sign of weakness if the Australian government imposes fuel rationing of some sort or another. To the contrary, it is a demonstration that they are in fact governing by ensuring an orderly and equitable distribution of a limited supply and maximising how long that supply will last. They need to ensure that fossil fuel suppliers do not hoard existing supplies to cash in on continually rising prices and pay an appropriate premium tax on windfall gains from price rises attributable entirely to geopolitical events. The Government should be aiming for limited but continuing availability rather than skirting the problem and running the tank dry. #auspol #illegalwar #dangerousallies

Long oil here as it’s mispriced. The Strait of Hormuz won’t be reopening anytime soon. Iran is already bombing ships trying to get through. There have already been several incidents today. They are also laying mines in the strait and hitting oil refineries across the Gulf. Iran wants oil to go as high as possible to punish everyone globally. They’re calling for $150 to $200 per barrel. The IEA coordinating the release of 400M barrels from strategic reserves across 32 countries is actually incredibly bullish for oil. It shows they are already starting to feel the impact, and Iran knows higher oil prices are one of the most effective ways to inflict global economic pain. America doesn’t decide when this war is over. Iran does, and I don’t think it ends within the next two weeks. Oil will be back over $100 a barrel within a couple of days.

BREAKING: Labor is putting petrol companies on notice with bigger penalties for misconduct and more scrutiny and surveillance, and shoring up fuel supply. Labor won’t cop big fuel corporates and servos treating Australians like mugs. That's why we're doubling penalties for misleading conduct - now up to $100M - ramping up surveillance of suspicious price spikes, and improving coordination of fuel deliveries, especially in regional areas. Australia is not immune to global economic uncertainty, but the industry is on notice not to exploit it, and that's why these measures will help make sure you are getting fair prices for fuel.
