Medicaid and Medicare Fraud The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2011 “unveiled its top 10 most wanted Medicare fraud fugitives and 7 of the 10 had ties to Cuba.” Some high profile cases linked to Cuba are: Oscar Sanchez was arrested in 2012 for defrauding Medicare of $31 million and laundering funds into Cuban banks. He was sentenced to four years and seven months in prison in 2013. Ubert Guillermo Rodriguez had been wanted by authorities since 2013 for $2.6 million in false Medicare claims. He was arrested upon arrival from Cuba in 2015. He pled guilty in 2016, and was sentenced to three years in prison. Joel Regino Díaz Martín returned to Cuba in 2020. The scheme involving a mental health clinic through which he had defrauded Medicaid of $4 million was discovered in 2024. NPR reported on February 8, 2011 on the curious case of what he described as a “homeless guy” who “supposedly got rent money and food to be the front man for a discount pharmacy that defrauded Medicare.” The “homeless guy” was Lieutenant Colonel Renier Vicente Rodriguez Fleitas, a former Cuban military officer who ran Pirifer Pharmacy and Discount and submitted approximately $1.8 million in false Medicare claims, according to the NPR story. politicsrights.com/cuba-kleptocra…

We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of fraud in our health care system. Next up: Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida. What I saw on the ground in Florida around durable medical equipment fraud was horrifying. The scale is out of control – and not just limited to these schemes. Cleaning this up will require a laser focus and real action from state leaders. The reality is that fraud in our government health programs is widespread, sophisticated, and deeply entrenched. Consider just a few recent cases: June 2025: The CEO of a healthcare software company was convicted of orchestrating a nationwide scheme that generated fraudulent physician orders and resulted in more than $1 billion in false Medicare claims. January 2026: Two health care executives were convicted for running a $34 million Medicare Advantage fraud scheme, using deceptive telemarketing tactics to pressure elderly beneficiaries into accepting medical equipment they didn’t need. January 2026: A laboratory owner admitted guilt in a $52 million Medicare fraud operation involving medically unnecessary genetic testing ordered through illegal kickbacks. January 2026: Two individuals were arrested in Central Florida for a Medicaid fraud scheme that billed the program for thousands of non-emergency medical transportation trips that never occurred, stealing more than $65,000 from taxpayers. And these are just the cases that have already been uncovered. Behind every fraudulent claim is money taken from taxpayers, resources diverted from patients who truly need care, and vulnerable seniors and low-income Americans being exploited for profit. Florida has been a hotspot for health care fraud for years. Taxpayers and vulnerable patients deserve better—and it’s time for state leadership to step up and work with us to stop it. We’re exposing the abuse, pursuing the fraudsters, and cleaning up these programs.

Seniors pay into Medicare their whole lives, and we will cherish the program. CMS is cracking down on rampant durable medical equipment fraud in South Florida. More to come soon. If you see something, say something. Report potential fraud at: oig.hhs.gov/fraud/report-f…

This is bullshit. Most hotels in Cuba are sanctioned by the @USTreasury not because they're "five-star" but they're owned by the military. He's actually violating US law by staying in such hotel!
Eyal Yakoby@EYakoby

BREAKING: Hasan fires back at criticism for staying in a five-star hotel during his “humanitarian aid” trip to Cuba—blames U.S. policy. “The government makes it illegal for us to stay where we want in Cuba. We have to stay in five-star hotels.” 🤣

So the reason why the entire grid collapses, causing a national blackout as opposed to the planned ones, is usually because of a technical failure. In this case, it was Nuevitas power station that disconnected from the grid first, according to Cuba’s electric union.
Ian Stewart@istewart1919

@ngameztorres @MiamiHerald I read it weeks ago and again now. You quote an expert on Cuban energy who said if oil doesn't arrive by March, they'll be out of fuel. What do you think that means for power generation? If you're going to claim the blackout wasn't caused by a fuel shortage, what caused it?

The entitlement is staggering—flying into our country, turning poverty into a performance, then retreating to five-star hotels owned by the same military that profits from repression.

Angry Cuban man goes to the hotel where the Code Pink communists are staying in Cuba. They get to enjoy electricity thanks to a generator but 99.9% of Cubans are without electricity tonight after the nationwide blackout 🇨🇺
