As always, the field at the Sunningdale Foursomes is full of familiar names and the occasional surprise entry, all hoping to navigate the unique handicap system and seven rounds of match play to join a remarkable list of past champions. David Corben and Harry Crockett managed exactly that last year, adding their names to a roll of honour that reads like a snapshot of golfing history. Among the most notable winners across the previous 91 editions are: - Joyce Wethered - Dai Rees - Max Faulkner - Peter Alliss - Sir Michael Bonallack - Peter Oosterhuis - Sam Torrance - Luke Donald - Ross Fisher - Marco Penge - Linn Grant - Maja Stark - Lottie Woad Not bad company to keep.

Our newest YouTube film, The Making of Old Petty, is out now. Filmed over three years, the documentary follows the creation of Old Petty, the new Tom Doak course at @CabotHighlands. From the earliest routing discussions to breaking ground, construction under the watchful eye of @CunninGolf, the provenance of the site, architectural detail, subtle contrasts with Castle Stuart, and the grow-in of this much-anticipated addition to one of Scotland’s most exciting golfing destinations. Last week, North Berwick announced that it had hired Gil Hanse as its consulting architect. Clyde Johnson, who had worked with the club for the prior four years, joined me on Designing Golf to reflect on his own projects at the course and the future of links restoration.

What’s the best course very few of us have heard of? One of my votes would be for Enniscrone in Ireland!

There’s a new kid on the Highlands’ block. Old Petty, a Tom Doak design, opens for preview play next month. I spoke to Tom recently about his formative days in the Highlands and designing Old Petty. He said ‘We didn't want to look like we were copying what Gil had done, so we had to find a different direction. Our idea was to try and model it after the earliest links courses, where the playing corridors weren't so clearly defined and the hazards were less formalized.’ You will find the link to the whole piece in the tweet below. It’s going to be an interesting addition to Highlands golf, I’m playing it on August 1 so stay tuned for my review then. Next June we’ll be doing a 36 hole day with OP and the OG, Castle Stuart. Thanks to @CunninGolf for the picture of Doak in the dirt!

It’s a summer of spectacular new openings in Scotland. Here are 2,400 words on what to expect from Old Petty at @CabotHighlands by Tom Doak, with Clyde Johnson as lead associate. A snapshot of what I think is that I use the word ‘genius’ in the article. todays-golfer.com/news-and-event…

@Top100Rick I'm not sure why you've used this pic to demonstrate the 'buried elephants' at Te Arai North? It's taken from the walkway to 7 tee, where very few balls would ever finish. 6 is a funky green, but that's because of the contour behind and in front, rather that the interior slopes.

Thoughts on buried elephants? Tom Doak went wild at Te Arai! Huge bold features everywhere. There are putts here where the best strategy is to lay up to 10 feet on your first putt. They are that crazy. (And fun!) I love them when on the right course and in the right quantity…which Doak seems to get right here!

Love this shines a light on the courses ingrained into the community. Great work @DJPie @TronCarterNLU. Need an Island tour or 9 holer - Tarland, Carrbridge, Anstruther, Boner Bridge………….

Along with the Scotland pod that went out today, here are a few scenes and sounds from @DJPie and @TronCarterNLU's drive from Arran to St. Andrews earlier this year, stopping at whatever golf courses they could find along the way.

"If the Old were only ever played in reverse, it would still be one of the most interesting courses imaginable. Greatness knows no convention." Clyde Johnson (@CunninGolf) ranks the Old Course's greens as played in the reverse routing for Design Notebook: thefriedegg.com/design-noteboo…

@CunninGolf’s writing is enviable. Rich, meaty, and vivid, yet concise. He says in one paragraph what would take most a page or more. The entire @fried_egg_golf roundtable about links golf is worth a read.

Dottie Pepper reports that the reason Bob MacIntyre got relief on 16 is because he's wearing metal spikes and stepped on a sprinkler head that he probably didn't even see and that if he was wearing soft spikes he would not have known the sprinkler head was there and would not have gotten relief normal sport
