@GreyBirth @neoliberal_hack Policy impacts behavior. The goal of the hefty fine isn’t punishment, it’s to disincentivize them from breaking the rule in the first place. It’s possible that this cleanup team causes more offenders if more ppl feel fine not cleaning up bc they know someone else will later.

@neoliberal_hack Its harder to catch offenders than it is to give resources to prevent poopy streets. Who would you assign to catch offenders? Increase the fine to $1500, keep the SCOOP patrol & do a monthly randomized giveaway $1500 drawn from ppl who have proof of 150+ poops scooped in a mo.

@MurrayHillGuy1 There’s no point in obtaining peak health if you are going to be perpetually miserable. The goal should be to become healthy for as long as you can, while still enjoying life. The book Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity has a relevant quote about this:

My buddy is on this whole NO alcohol trend now. So strict with it. While yes, I fully agree alcohol isn’t the best for you, I’m not on the “never will I drink again” train. I’m against that mindset honestly. You need balance in life. Sometimes you need a random crazy night out with your friends. Not every weekend, but acting like having 3 drinks twice a month is heroin is insane. Fast forward 6 months into his new lifestyle: • still pretty chubby, maybe lost like 5 lbs • doesn’t look THAT much different • not getting any chicks lol • leaves bars before midnight • judges everyone else drinking • whole personality became “wellness” Some of you replaced having fun with optimization.

@PaulSkallas On a warm Friday afternoon, in the middle of downtown Chicago, you can very easily get a seat at one of the most famous bakery chains in the country and stay there for as long as you want. This is mind blowing coming from NYC. Chicago feels so much calmer.

One nice thing about Chicago is the ease of getting an empty table at a random coffee place or starbucks. It's not a very crowded city. You can just walk a few blocks to find a place. When I lived in NYC it seemed like finding a place to sit at work in was so difficult. Space was such a premium. And they hated you being there for long.

At Starbucks. Guy next to me has been here for hours. I ask him if he’s collecting brainwaves and he pretends not to knoe what that is. But when I push him he tells me he does ‘simulations’ to detect cancer. He says his phd is in bioinformatics — he’s here collecting brainwaves.

@bowtiedgerman I never order doordash but I did when I got very sick. I ordered pho (the vietnamese soup). They sent the broth, noodles, meat, and veggies in different containers as well as extra seasonings and sauces so that everything would taste fresh.

I highly recommend La Crêperie in Lakeview East, Chicago. Simple but well executed French dishes, a beautiful interior and patio, and always has French jazz playing. I got an apple cinnamon crepe and it was filling & delicious.

Thailand has no chill. Found this at a small doll museum in the back of a silk shop. Located in a tiny town in Phrae district.

@DeanTTraining One rule my parents had for us growing up was only water to drink. No fruit juice, no soda, no sugary drinks. We still ate desserts (in moderation) and to this day I do love desserts. But I can’t even drink things like gatorade because it’s so sweet and I’m used to only water.

@simonsarris Ambition can manifest in different ways. New York attracts ambitious fashion designers, chefs, finance professionals, journalists, lawyers, etc. It’s not just about money, but status and power as well. Michelin stars, vogue covers, who you know, and who you influence play a role

@owroot It wasn’t on purpose, it was an unintended consequence of strict food safety & preparation regulations made to keep kids safe, yet in this case is doing more harm. Unfortunately, we have a lot of bureaucratic issues like this that are too rigid and don’t allow for flexibility.

If you happen to find yourself dining at Cabra in Chicago, I highly recommend the goat empanadas and the tuna tataki. The empanadas had incredibly flaky, almost pie-like crust with a delicious goat filling. The tataki had a unique combination of flavors that flow amazingly well.

I appreciate how Chicago has a lot of colorful murals covering “ugly” places like underpasses and concrete walls. These were all taken in Roger’s Park.

@modernhistory I was wondering why I never see them in Chicago! They are somewhat common in Manhatten. I guess parking is a lot easier to find in Chicago so it’s not as necessary.

Restaurants are getting way too fast and loose with “smashburger” terminology. Just having small thin burger patties doesn’t make it a smashburger! It’s only a smashburger if they’re smashed on high heat griddle/pan for a deep crust and get super thin and crispy around the edges!

Most people have only tried central Thai cuisine. But you guys are missing out other regional dishes! Here are some pictures of Northern Thai food that I tried. They use more herbs, chili dips, and fermented pastes. Less sweet, less spicy, and sticky rice is the main carb.

Every single time I order a macchiato, the barista warns me that it’s small and asks if I still want it. What are you guys doing to these poor baristas for them to have to implement this policy? Anyways, I highly recommend The Understudy in Chicago. Cafe + workspace + bookstore

It was difficult to capture the sheer size of this statue in a photo. It stands 20 stories tall, towering over the Phasi Chareon neighborhood in west #Bangkok.
