Flattered that Somnus' Palace won bronze in the Readers' Favorite awards behind @zsdiamanti and Shami Stovall (@GameOverStation), two fantasy authors I'm a fan of. I was literally listening to Chronos Warlock when I was notified of this medal!

Yes. The U.S. Constitution gives the U.S. Congress power to adopt laws governing only certain specified subject matters. Some of those subjects are reserved solely for the federal government; others can be governed by both federal and state law. When federal and state law conflict, federal law prevails under the Constitution's Supremacy Clause. Under the Constitution's 10th Amendment, all powers not conferred on the federal government are reserved for the states. In effect, this means that state governments can enact laws governing a much broader range of subjects than the federal government. Traditionally, most laws focused on the general health, welfare, and safety were state law, though federal law has expanded greatly into this area over the past century. Notably, states can and do confer their legislative power on municipalities like counties and cities, so they can create and enforce laws too. Typically, state law takes precedence over local and municipal laws, but not always--some state constitutions create "home rule" jurisdictions that have the power in certain subject matters to override state law. Finally, you've likely heard about U.S. regulations from entities like the FDA and the EPA. This is a complicated issue, but basically, the U.S. Congress gave the President's branch of the government power to create rules governing certain subject matters. These rules prevail over state law if there's a conflict, but they cannot contradict statutes of the U.S. Congress.

@Austen I vividly remember reaching the end of that level in 1995, then dying to that last, unexpected Kremling cart. It felt a deep life lesson distilled to video game form: "Count no man happy till he's reached the end."

@kitten_beloved Similarly, the LCD TV killed Dance Dance Revolution. It took TVs twenty years to get back to a tolerable level of display lag.

Time Mage - There's something satisfying about how a boring "status-effect support" mage quietly transforms into a strategic powerhouse, with Meteo, Haste, Quick, and Return. Blue Mage - Probably the most rewarding class of all, if you're the sort of person who memorizes enemy levels, vulnerabilities, attack elements, etc. Lots of replay value from this job by itself.

@DarkSkai_NUTS @blacknredtext Yes. Xenoblade Chronicles is closer to classic Final Fantasy than anything Square has released since FFX. The FF7 remakes are good to the extent they're faithful to the original. But what's been added is mostly empty bloat, and the music has been drained of its life.

To me it was Final Fantasy, if you like any of the titles after 10 then good for you, I've said this before and I'll say it again, I hope they inspire you like they did to me, but from someone who played the OG's they are a hollow shell of its former self, they can try and go "turn-based" again to try and win their older fans back but it still wouldn't be the same without Sakaguchi's guidance, Uematsu's music, and Amano's art

Part of the problem is that most programming is no longer done granularly from the ground up, as it was decades ago. Rather, to save time and avoid having to "reinvent the wheel," programmers today include gigantic amounts of preassembled code in their projects--some of which is useful, but most of which is irrelevant and unnecessary for their purposes. Further, the way this preassembled code performs certain tasks is nowhere near as efficient as tailor-made, bespoke code would be, but programmers use it anyway to save time. This process has repeated itself for several generations, with the result that most code today is ridiculously bloated and inefficient. This is why the same games that played smoothly on, like, a 1990s Super Nintendo or Playstation end up being laggy on modern systems.

@1GamewithDave1 Probably XP, but anything in the bottom left would work, so you can scroll to it and click without looking. Having to carefully center your mouse over the Start menu is a major GUI blunder and a big step backward from Windows 95.

日本人は英語で何か頼む際の『pleaseの重要性』を軽視しがちな気がするのですが、これ絶対に付けた方がいいです。"please"はアメリカでは『Magic word』なんて呼ばれ、子供が"Pass me that"(それ取って)とか言うと"Say the magic word"(pleaseを付けなさい)と言葉使いを躾けられるくらい大切です。

@tanpukunokami It was like this for me when I started dating in Midwestern America in the early 2000s. Not so by the 2010s in New York. I think this still is normal in some parts of the country, particularly for young people in conservative or rural areas.

This might be hard to believe, but In Japan, you can't just "start dating" someone. There is a formal confession. Called "kokuhaku." You say "I like you. Please go out with me." Out loud. To their face. If they say yes, you are now officially dating. Not before. There is no "so… what are we?" phase. Japan skipped it. With a system.

I agree. It started out as a game about Terra, but I think that Celes stole the show. This scene is a good example of the "bad outcome" being the good outcome. You can watch Celes lose the last person she loves, hit rock-bottom, find new hope in the depths of hopelessness, and embark into the World of Ruin with a spirit matching the world itself. Or, you can save Cid and get a generic, "Wow, thanks! I feel much better."

I think people are missing that this is comparing Japanese McDonalds to U.S. movie theaters. Movie theaters have big cups so no one runs out during a 2-hour movie and has to get a refill. U.S. fast-food joints do have bigger cups than Japan, but not monstrosities like these.

@cvvobh @PlusEVAnalytics What if he is hostile and only opens a letter if you chose right? Then switching makes your probability of winning zero. So if those are the two options and equally likely you have a (2/3 + 0) / 2 = 1/3 chance of winning if switching
