Your hippocampus doesn't encode days that feel identical. If this Tuesday looks like last Tuesday, your brain files them as a single compressed memory. The second day never gets its own folder. This is why decades feel like they disappeared. The hippocampus uses novelty as its filter for "worth storing." Repetitive routines trigger temporal compression. Same commute, same desk, same dinner, same bedtime: the brain deduplicates the whole sequence into one entry. You lived 365 days. You filed 40. Research from Jeffrey Zacks at Washington University has tracked this with fMRI. As people move through continuous experience, the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex fire in discrete bursts at moments the brain flags as "something changed." Each burst becomes a retrievable memory later. In stretches with no boundaries, the bursts flatten. Participants with more boundaries in a given period remembered more of it afterward. Segmentation literally builds memory. Sleep is the second mechanism. During slow-wave sleep, the hippocampus replays the day's episodes and transfers them to the neocortex for long-term storage. This is when memory actually gets filed. Cut sleep short and encoding efficiency drops. Chronic sleep debt means experiences you had never complete the transfer. The memory existed. It just never made it to disk. The third mechanism is where dopamine meets attention. Novel stimuli trigger the ventral tegmental area to release dopamine into the hippocampus, which gates what gets encoded. Mind-wandering does the opposite. When your default mode network takes over (phone scrolling, rumination, email during dinner), the hippocampus stops tagging the present. You were at the wedding. Your hippocampus was in your inbox. Three independent systems working against you. Novelty collapse compressing repetitive days into single entries. Sleep debt blocking consolidation. Default mode network swallowing attention before encoding completes. The fix comes straight out of the mechanism. New locations, new food, new people, new routes home. The brain needs boundaries to build memories. Go to bed earlier so replay actually runs. Put the phone down when something is happening so the dopamine signal can fire. The more forgettable the day, the shorter the decade.

I like reading nonfiction adventure books about people setting off by themselves with some great outdoors ambition in mind. They decide they must climb an Alaskan mountain or kayak the entire Pacific coast, dependent on sleeping rough or the charity of others. It always strikes me when I read these books the incredible privilege of being male. These solo adventurers, always men, typically young, have no sense of mortality or their fragility of their physical form. Everything they set their mind to requires grit alone, and everyone who doubts them or advises caution is just jealous they don't have the same strength of character. That unmistakable hubris would never occur to a woman of any age, not unless she was nearly criminally naive. No woman would ever think to rely on the kindness of people picking up hitchhikers, or trust that someone who promises to rendezvous to deliver them food for some risky journey would ever follow through. Our very lives and well being are inherently transactional. We learn that bitter lesson young, ideally the first time we are cat called by a passing car after growing breasts, but sometimes, tragically, much younger. We learn that strangers think of us as a collection of holes to spend themselves into, that our entire being is commodified, and that human kindness often hides much more sinister goals. Because no matter how savvy we think we are, an older man is always physically stronger, and always more practiced at fooling us than we are at detecting his unstated premises. There are no risky and romantic outdoor tramping adventures for women, not without a chaperone, or with such ample forethought that we are always hyper aware and armed. Vagrancy for women is not the wanderings of youthful optimism, seduced by the aesthetic writings of those like Thoreau. It is always a tragedy, which leads to even greater ones.

@AndrewZywiecMD Given that lesbians adopt more girls than boys, I think the obvious answer is same sex couples are afraid of adopting a child who they can’t properly parent not being of that sex. That you go for the creepy explanation says more about you.

Gay male couples adopt boys at massively higher rates: 81.8% boys in one study (vs ~50% for hetero couples). Preferences and outcomes show clear skew to boys. Gay adoption isn't 'love,' it's child abuse that exposes kids to environments with elevated sexual abuse risk. Ban it.

@S___Elliott Progressive grifts from CA's high speed rail to the homeless industrial complex to Mamdani's grocery stores are all about one thing: diverting 90% of the budget to their friends' nonprofits, consultancies etc. The budget needs to be $30M, $3M for the store and 27M for grift

Mamdani’s solution to food deserts is to spend $30 million building a grocery store a few blocks away from Costco. Surely it would be cheaper to buy people memberships?

Mayor Matt Mahan
Mayor Matt Mahan@MattMahanSJ·
And unlike @TomSteyer, I’m not all talk. As mayor of Northern California’s largest city, I’ve taken real action to protect our undocumented neighbors:
✔️Banned ICE from city property ✔️Banned ICE from wearing masks ✔️Sued the Trump administration over a dozen times There’s more to do. As Governor, I’ll do whatever it takes to deliver for our communities.
Mayor Matt Mahan@MattMahanSJ

How @TomSteyer made his billions: ✔️Private prisons ✔️ ICE Detention Centers ✔️ Oil, Gas, and Coal …….now he’s using those billions to try to convince us he’s seen the light? Californians deserve results – not a billionaire working on a rebrand.

China will not surpass the U.S. because it lacks our innovation & risk taking. The median Tsinghua undergrad is smarter than median Harvard, but the top 5% at Harvard produces once in a generation talent who can innovate in a way that the Chinese can't.

Warning, I'm going to do a wonky California politics post. I hope this helps people who are floundering with what to do now that Swalwell has dropped out, because I haven't made up my mind either. Here's where I stand on my voting priorities: I hate Trump, and want someone who will stand up to him and federal Republicans. I am strongly YIMBY, and want more building of housing in California. I'm also completely over the focus on Israel and the fostering of antisemitism on UC campuses. I care about the environment, but I'm not a socialist. I'm very, very feminist. So that brings us to the race. Basically, it looks like the top two to advance are going to be the either of the two Republicans (probably Hilton) and one of two Democrats (Porter and Steyer look like the frontrunners now). However, the Dem lineup is not 100% set in stone yet, as Swalwell's former supporters have not coalesced behind any single candidate. Here's where I stand on a Porter vs. Steyer matchup: I lean Porter. Honestly, I don't like either of them. But Porter seems more focused on continuing to provide strong opposition to national Republicans and MAGA politics. That puts her over the edge for me. I refuse to vote for Hilton or Bianco, they're friendly to MAGA, so that's completely off the table. What I will be doing as the race gets closer is watching how the vote splitting is going on the Dem side. If it looks like we're in serious danger of Hilton and Bianco advancing, I hold my nose and vote for the top Dem candidate, which is very likely to be Porter. However, I really, really, really hope that Swalwell's former supporters can coalesce behind Villaraigosa or Becerra, who seem the most similar to him and also, either of them is infinitely preferrable to Porter as far as I am concerned. That said, I'm not willing to risk having two Republicans on the ballot for Governor of the largest and wealthiest state in November, both of which are friendly to MAGA. I have to think about what is best for America, and unfortunately, that's strategically voting for Porter if the field remains divided.
Trinity Votes 🇮🇱🇺🇦@TrinityMustache

Katie Porter is so foul, I would struggle to vote for her over even a Republican. I’d probably have to leave a ballot entry blank for the first time in my life. She is absolutely the worst outcome for California.

@PippengerHarlo Actually the reverse might happen, German engineers tested autonomous vehicles on the autobahn and found that when 60% were self-driving it greatly reduced traffic because they don’t drive like humans - no sudden stops and surges and overall movement speed increased in traffic

feel like the Waymo safety discussion is ignoring how unsustainable/impossible it would be to shift a significant fraction of transportation to autonomous vehicles. It’s pretty cost prohibitive now but if it’s ever not, it will just choke cities in traffic

NEW: If Waymo gets its way, 2 million workers will be out of work. When Waymo gets a firm hold on a city, wages go down. Some drivers now have to work 12 hours day, 7 days a week just to get by. This isn't inevitable — but Big Tech is spending millions to make you think it is.
