There's a certain magic when you beat a game fair and square, "cheats" can definitely change the experience. But if the alternative is them not playing the game, playing with "cheats" is probably better.

I want to tell a story. My daughter like video games. Maybe not the same video games I do, but she's liked the games she's liked over the years. Splatoon, Mario 3D World, Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, Roblox, etc. One of the game she played when she was like 11, was Celeste. She like the visuals and simple core controls of the game. It was also WAY too hard for her, and she was never going to be able to clear it. But thankfully, Celeste had this Assist Mode in the game. Not something I'd personally use, but she did and it allowed her to experience the game entirely in a way that she enjoyed and looks back fondly on. Having this didn't ruin the game for speed runners, and didn't detract from its amazing level design. But it did allow her to enjoy the game. It was a good reminder for me, and I always look back at this as a great example of game design. When I was young (old joke here), it was stuff like Game Genie that would do this. Or the Konami code. Aint no way I would beat Contra without 30 lives...but thanks to that Konami code, I have fond memories of the game and it's final levels. Same with TMNT2 and its reverse code. All of this is to say, games having "cheats" for the player to be able to get past tough parts is something I will always advocate for. It keeps games more open to people who will enjoy them, and they can then challenge themselves as they get more into it. Aint nothing wrong with that. TLDR - These features in Mina look neat. I'm excited to play the base game, and admire the dev team for making so many cool options!

These have a lotta potential, but I still don't understand the resurgent appeal for toggles that destroy the need for any progression through game mastery. What's wrong with pushing through your mistakes and bettering yourself in the process?

Hoping to make the game easier? Amp up the challenge? Looking to get WEIRD???? 🥸 We’ve got you covered. Mina the Hollower has tons of built-in modifiers that customize your experience from the lenient to the punishing. 💪 What kind of experience are YOU going to craft? 👾

@estrodiol just wanna say that quote they're using is about making your core gameplay loop fun not the game settings.

@RobinPoedev not every game is a zelda game with puzzles and branching quest lines to get stuck on and think over and it seems pretty disingenuous to act like an assist designed for a zelda game would be some kind of instant win button. also walkthroughs exist so who cares.

When I was 9 I used to dream about what was in Majoras mask second half, tantalizingly out of reach. It felt as if the game grew with me, developed and unfolded as I aged. This would have been stolen from me if I felt like I was owed completion and if it allowed me to take it.

@VaderPRO1 @TheRedGoner i don't see why i should care if someone else presses a button that says that enemies do half damage in a video game. i wouldn't, and they can make their own choices. if its fun for them, i support them in doing it. maybe they'll play the game again without it.

@VaderPRO1 @TheRedGoner i would never have been able to access real time strategy games as an adult if i didn't use cheat codes when i was a kid that made the games fun. i would never have sunk so much time into metroid games without guides on how to 100% them.

everyone knows the quote "players will optimize the fun out of a game if you let them" so it's really great that whenever a developer is like "Check out this cool Optimize The Fun Out button!" a bunch of people who dgaf about game design go "lmao just don't press the button"

@MattHausmannAtx @jet2chiclete telling people to fuck off for giving unsolicited advice isn't insecurity, you sound like a smug dickhead when you try to psychoanalyze like this.

@cytryst @jet2chiclete She acts insecure when her art is criticized because she knows the critics have a point. It doesn't feel like the thing she created is succeeding at what it set out to do. She's not going "it's fine not to like it." I believe the word you would use for this is "copium."

I dont think Haus of Decline is that funny either but "correcting" her comics seems rather rude. Uncouth even.

@MattHausmannAtx @jet2chiclete she makes comics based on her own sense of humor. i like that she uses a lot of dialogue bc it adds a sense of lucidity to the absurdist humor that makes it more distinct in my mind. read different comics if its not your thing. humor isn't a science.

@jet2chiclete She could be funny though. She always has a good idea and then adds too much to it. While a lot of the people saying "cut things from your comics" are jerks, they are also correct. I wish people were nicer about it because I want to see her work after incorporating this feedback.
