@groc @nypost @grok (and thanks @groc) do maids actually get paid a salary, or is the quoted salary a hypothetical figure based on hourly wages that rarely add up to a full time week of work?

NYC hotel maids now make more than rookie cops, firefighters, teachers - as union averts strike following new salary agreement trib.al/yKwZq6G

@nypost @groc This story is wildly misleading. Maids don’t get a flat salary. It’s a hypothetical calculation based on the hourly wage assuming a hotel maid worked a 40-hour week, which is not standard. It’s theoretical.

Update: Saki MIYAKE sustained a fall in practice and has fractured the anterior superior iliac spine of her pelvis. Using crutches, she indicated her return will likely take about 1.5 to 2 months with rehabilitation. She will withdraw from the ice show “Kassouya”. #SakiMiyake #三宅咲綺

As the comment “I’ll help you when you collapse” gets so much attention, and we took this quote from the translation of the interpreter in the press conference, we just had this double checked by a Japanese speaker who listened to the Japanese original. She confirmed that Mao said what the interpreter said. Here is the Japanese original of Mao’s words: 2本目のジャンプぐらいでもう滑れなくなってしまったので本当に6分の後も迷いましたし、本当の本当の直前でもうやりきって、そして先生から「倒れたら助けに行くから」っていう風に言ってもらえて、そこでもうできるだけ全力で頑張ろうっていう風に思いました

Mao Shimada 🇯🇵 137.01 / 208.91 “I was exhausted today. However, I was able to finish my skating, and I think the fact that I never gave up and finished my skate led to this result.” “Actually, yesterday I was bedridden, and until then I thought there was nothing I could do except withdraw. However, when I woke up this morning, I felt a little better. I went to practice, but I was not able to do a full run-through. I could only jump until the second jump, and after that I was not able to skate anymore.” “I was not sure whether I would perform until the six-minute warm-up. I was really unsure. But my coach told me, ‘I will help you when you collapse.’ That changed my mindset, and I thought: I have to do this.” On winning four consecutive Junior World titles “Winning four consecutive titles is not easy. This season had more struggles than good times.” “So going into seniors, I want to reset and start fresh. I think I will now be in a position where I can challenge myself and push hard. I really want to give everything and perform well in senior events.” #JWFigure #FigureSkating #JuniorWorlds

This is a shut down event. Biggest snow in 5 years for NYC region. 1st blizzard warning for NYC in 8 years. Won't be too bad Sunday until after dark. Snow drifts of 2 to 3 feet likely Monday. Multi day recovery for airlines.

@rockerskating ALL THREE US men lost points unnecessarily by getting +REP in their free skates. A consistent theme this season.

Yeah I’ve gotten this a few times that people said it was surprising I thought the early skates were good. I mean I’m not saying they were flawless but Li, Carrillo, Britschgi, Selevko, Rizzo, Egadze, Gumennik, Gogolev, Sato, Torgashev, Aymoz, Cha, Shaidorov - all good to great

@rockerskating Great recap! I get the impression this competition was rather different live vs streamed, because the event seemed cursed to me long before the final four. landings seem particularly shaky, even when jumps looked good in the air.

One performance should never define anyone. A good one or a disappointing one. Ilia Malinin is a class act and someone I greatly admire! As badly as I feel for him tonight, I know he will respond with strength, courage, and dignity. We all love you Ilia!
