Mr. President @HassanSMohamud, Please do not lead the nation into another round of conflict. The country is too fragile for another power struggle among clans and factions. Many of us have pointed out that the goals behind the entire exercise of changing the constitution were term extension and gerrymandering subsequent political dispensations by capturing the election commission and creating self-serving laws. This attempt cannot work in #Somalia. Mr. President, I am sure you understand that the parliament its term is expiring cannot grant itself or you an illegal extension or change a constitution. You rejected it when the previous parliament attempted to do so. You also understand that you cannot sell your constitution and term extension proposal to the political stakeholders and international partners who contribute about 70% of the budget of your government and pay for the peacekeeping forces. Mr. President, Before May 15, 2026, please secure an agreement for indirect elections for the three states and the FGS. Surely, some form of technical extension, perhaps six months or so, will be inevitable. Regarding the constitution, the costly and polarizing exercise your government has undertaken will serve as a lesson learned for future policymakers researchers. I believe that, following a genuine reconciliation, we must use the international best practices and not allow the politicians to draft and approve the document.

What a speech. Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo reminded the nation what true leadership and statesmanship look like. History will remember this moment. He spoke with clarity and humility about his own determination to deliver one-person-one-vote elections, but also about the difficult responsibility of governing a fragile nation. Faced with the real risk of political rupture, he chose compromise over confrontation — accepting a less-than-ideal electoral model because keeping Somalia united mattered more than personal or political victory. He recalled the consultations he held with former presidents and national leaders, demonstrating that leadership requires listening, humility, and respect for collective wisdom. He also walked the country through how the Dhusamareeb I, II, and III conferences came about and how those difficult negotiations ultimately produced a political agreement that preserved national cohesion at a critical moment. The message was unmistakable: power is temporary, but the nation is permanent. At a time when Somalia needs unity, consultation, and restraint, President Farmaajo showed what it means to put country before self. @MrDuqa @M_Farmaajo

Those who forced through unilateral constitutional amendments, including the President, the Speaker, & committees, should face legal accountability. Breaking the constitutional compact that holds Somalia together is a grave breach of public trust & a path toward disintegration.

The Daallo flight incident exposes the problem. As power in Mogadishu turns personal, abrupt decisions disrupted hundreds overnight. That reflects social contract breakdown. Puntland’s path is a negotiated confederal settlement, constrained by Deni’s presidential ambitions now!

Both the FGS & regional authorities want to handpick the MPs who will later elect them or their preferred candidates. Nothing will change until Somalis elect their own representatives through genuinely competitive, neutrally managed elections. Ignore the political tantrums!
