I remember ~2008 lunch conversations w ppl triangulating carpools & multi-leg car + bus routes to avoid paying more for gas. The 2008 Olympics showed auto co's advertising EVs by 2014.

Key 2000s-era lesson: renewables patch energy security vulnerabilities by diversifying from oil, the original critical supply chain dependency. #tbt 2008 when gas prices rose so much it prompted behavior change & North American car cos were advertising future EVs. Then fracking.

NEW ODD LOTS: It's @DanielYergin @tracyalloway and I talk to the Pulitzer Prize winning author about why he sees a "different world" emerging in the wake of the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dan…

@Brad_Setser Unrelated, but can I point out how lovely it is that the highest denomination NTD bill shows a group of primary school students studying a globe?

And why do Taiwan's lifers -- who hold foreign bonds against TWD policies -- need to hedge if that just creates unwanted pressure on the currency to appreciation ... 3/ cfr.org/articles/taiwa…

Also love his Twitter threads on roadtrips around China! Particularly the running conversation with invariably excellent local guides. Thanks so much for posting, @pretentiouswhat 🙏

Listening to David @pretentiouswhat Fishman lead a conversation at Peking University's Yenching Global Forum on China & the energy transition. The man not only knows his stuff but communicates it effortlessly. Fantastic talk. He's such a blessing to China discourse.

We are on NPR today. I used to be a reporter. I know a good story when I see one. This is a good story. Huy spent 24 years in the US, built a career, earned a PhD, taught in New York, and then chose to go home. And that is not even for a sure thing, but for a belief that something real was being built in Vietnam. That kind of conviction is rare. That kind of courage is rarer. Smart, hardworking people exist everywhere. In the world of AI, we get to build a flat company across a flattened world. That has always been what I believed. Huy and the team in Ho Chi Minh City are the proof. This one feels personal to me. I hope it does for you too. Check this out: marketplace.org/story/2026/04/…

@natolambert Hadn't thought of this possibility. Human-scale open source scripting is awesome bc you've got a global community using it, ie testing for vulnerabilities. Open source accessibility is so valuable. Maybe there's more granularity here depending on use case and security tradeoffs

10. As ever-stronger closed models are built, previewed, and released, there will be more safety-shocks saying that open-weight versions of the strongest AI models never can be allowed to exist, similar to reactions to Claude Mythos. These can spur burdensome regulation on open models.

I spent some time trying to distill all the complex factors impacting open models -- economics, capabilities, distribution, policy, etc. -- into a clear list of beliefs. Here they are in full. 1. It’s surprising that the top closed models did not show a growing capability margin over open models, based on compute differences for training and research, especially in the second half of 2025 and through today.

I made a big deal to @haugejostein about the importance of visiting rural areas in inland provinces to serve as a grounding contrast to the relatively wealthy countryside in a rich province like Jiangsu, but then rural Shangrao (Jiangxi) had village houses like this. 🙄

Vietnam’s Party chief began his visit to China by a HSR trip to Xiong’an. He returns to Vietnam by HSR from Beijing to Nanning. Very similar to Deng Xiaoping’s historic HSR trip in Japan, 1978. Metro & railway constructions to dominate future Vietnam. vnexpress.net/tong-bi-thu-ch…
