What does the Ethereum Foundation STEEL Team do? STEEL is the EF team responsible for Specifications & Testing for the Ethereum Execution Layer ⚔️🛡️ A relatively new team that ensures that EL: 1️⃣ Specs are clear & correct📐✅ 2️⃣ Clients are adequately tested before forks🧪

🧵Thread Series (1/3): STEEL at Ethereum Foundation 1/ This last summer I worked at Ethereum Foundation (@ethereumfndn) as one of their first official interns. My work was with the STEEL team, specifically on the EELS side of things. What does that mean? Lets unpack... 👇

lol shoutout to whoever made the agenda for today's ethereum dev call, balers really do be balling 🏀 and on this note, if you care whether bals are implemented as a hash (single file) or as an MPT root, chime in now! on discord or the next breakout meeting.

Agree to all of this, that's why I said it needs multiple orders of magnitude more effort - and clearly it can't be on client dev teams to set this up. We need to get to a point where 1. teams (like HOPR) can just PR a (somewhat) reproducible test case (like my favorite eth_getLogs issue) 2. Hive team decides if the test is reasonable (this will get VERY resource intensive), if yes: merge and include in future test runs 3. Client team gets alerted of failing tests, ideally fixes them rapidly, ship new version, all good 4. Client and Hive teams can discuss and clarify what is actually expected (or not) 5. In case of dispute, Hive team can escalate non-compliance, eventually client team funding can get slashed (I don't want to sound like an absolute bitch again but I do believe in such absolutely last resort incentive alignment setups!)

@hanni_abu So EELS and EEST were to some extent inspired by the consensus-layer specs. On the CL side, it's a more collaborative effort with many CL client teams actively contributing test cases to the repo. But we do have a STEEL team member that also contributes there @leolarav 🙌

@danceratopz I was gonna ask if there's a version of STEEL for the consensus layer but I guess that's just the protocol security and protocol consensus teams
