Am hesitant to post this because I don't want it come across wrong and framed in any type of arrogance. I mess up plenty of times with coaching (and life), ignore plenty of opportunities that I should step into, and certainly don't always get things right. But I feel it's too good not to share. And a reminder to not underestimate our influence - however big or small - we have on those around us. This is a large - maybe the largest - reason why I love coaching youth sports. It's not about W's and L's (although they still are important). It's about character development and life lessons well beyond the sport itself. I still remember specific snippets of my coaches growing up, and I'm sure there are unconscious paradigms I've not even aware of. Earlier this week I had to have a hard conversation with one of our players. It was tough, and it didn't end well. But last night he came up to me with this note before practice. I read it, and called him over. Gave him a big hug, said I appreciated it - and how this ability to admit when we're wrong, to own up to it, is a huge sign of high character and will serve him well throughout his life. And that even as an adult, it's still hard and painful for me to do, yet we need to. That I was proud of him, believe in him, and only want the best for him - even when it's through hard conversations. Going to keep this note as a keepsake for a long time.

The only thing anyone asked was whether I could keep up (barely). The beauty of being a shitty rhythm guitarist at heart is that with two bar chords and three scale positions the answer is generally yes. They never even asked where I was from or what my name was. I love old musicians.

Current status: hiking as far away from humans as i can get all day, whilst still spending evenings near enough to civilization that i can sit in on guitar at the pub after dinner, for as many days as I can, wash rinse repeat: #getoutside #makemusic
