Two extraordinary statistics from @LondonCouncils today:
- One in every 21 children in London now lives in temporary accommodation.
- London authorities spend £4 million on temporary accommodation every single day.

Electrification is not enough for decarbonisation and the latest work by IEA show this.... demand is increasing almost as fast as renewables can be deployed. Hence why many major AI companies investing in small nuclear @CleanPowerDave @chrisbrown @JackMinchella @indy_johar

CO2 emissions are now shown to fall only 3% from 2022 to 2030. Last year they showed a 5% fall. Net Zero pathway shows they need to fall by 33%🤯 In the 12 months since the world promised to "transition away from fossil fuels" it doesn't look like we are any closer🤷♂️

Biodiversiy is declining, yet we have limited knowledge about how that affects human well-being. My work linking bats, insecticide use, and human infant health is out today in Science (science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…), and tells a complex story about how those are connected.

Momentous: The UK, home to the world’s first coal power station in 1882, will stop using coal to generate electricity this month, the 1st G7 country to do so
Coal supplied 80% of UK electricity in 1990. Remember: they said it couldn't be done

D Tel (£) Angela Rayner “is considering abolishing Right to Buy for newly built council houses...” Good. Removal of the threat should encourage private capital to invest in homes rented via councils without the danger of tenants buying them. telegraph.co.uk/money/property…

“The thing I will be nervous about PFI is if you just use it to get things off balance sheet... And that's crazy right? Because the one thing governments can do better than the private sector, unambiguously, is borrowing money.” Well said @Gus_ODonnell

A fundamental transformation of the world's energy system is underway. In the @IEA Net Zero scenario by 2050:
⚡️electricity more than doubles to more than 50% of final energy consumption
☀️solar and wind make up 40% of primary energy supply
📉final energy demand falls by 22% due to electrification and efficiency

Very sad news. Few rivalled Nicky’s passion for London. She was one of those who kept the fire burning for London-wide government in the post-GLC, pre-GLA wilderness years. A big loss.

Very sad to hear my dear friend @nickygavron has passed. A stalwart of London and Haringey politics, she was a life force at City Hall. Passionate about the Climate Emergency, the Built Environment and Urban Planning she improved the lives of so many people. Generous, kind and engaging she will be hugely missed.

The Economist just published a deeply-researched story about car bloat, and it's very, very damning:
"For every life that the heaviest 1% of SUVs and trucks save, there are more than a dozen lives lost in other vehicles."
Well worth your time: economist.com/interactive/un…
