Geothermal energy is ready for prime time. The next step to bring it onto the grid is for utilities and PUCs in the west procure it in their integrated resource plans. New report from CPE on what utilities thinking about geothermal need to know to bring new firm power online.

FERC approved SPP combo transmission planning and generator interconnection process. Supported by utilities, states, generators. Includes new cost sharing mechanism that assigns costs to generators. Doesn't include large loads in part bc SPP has been working on this for 5 years!
Ari Peskoe@AriPeskoe

SPP showing that it's possible to allocate regional transmission costs to data centers. It's proposing 3 options to stakeholders. This is a HUGE missing piece to ensure data centers are paying for all infrastructure built for them.

PJM is the first grid operator to implement FERC's requirement to maximize the usable capacity of existing grid infrastructure by employing more granular and precise thermal ratings, going live with hourly “ambient air” adjusted transmission line ratings March 4. Nationally, we have about 5.6GWe of capacity available through nuclear uprates. I've made a map that allow you to see all the opportunities and the regulatory hurdles (if any) to uprates. You can even click on individual plants for reactor breakdowns. nuclearbarbarian.github.io/NukeUprateDash…

The REWIRE Act directs FERC to increase return on equity for reconductoring projects, a critical step for accelerating deployment of high-performance conductors (HPCs).

Great to see @SenMcCormickPA and @SenPeterWelch come together on bipartisan legislation to accelerate grid tech innovation, cut unnecessary red tape, and support grid modernization. Thanks for your leadership @ClearPathAction is proud to support the bill: subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eenews…

Rate freezes are a bad policy idea on reliability, affordability, & electrification grounds. Likely to defer investment, lead to rate shock, lock in regressive rates, & slow electrification. It also mistakes affordability for price stability & not costs relative to income.

Love to see it! 🌋 🌋 DOE's Office of Geothermal (OG) has just announced up to $171.5M to support next-generation geothermal field tests, as well as characterization & confirmation drilling for both next-generation and conventional hydrothermal resources.

"A Clean Energy Accelerator Charge (CEAC) will provide for 1,400 MW of wind, 200 MW of solar and 300 MW of long-duration energy storage"
Form Energy@FormEnergyInc

⚡️ Big news today: Form Energy will deploy a 300 MW / 30 GWh multi-day iron-air battery system with @xcelenergy to help power a new @Google data center in Minnesota. At 30 GWh, this is the largest battery system by energy capacity ever announced globally. 🌍 It also marks Form Energy’s first deployment for a data center — demonstrating the unique value of 100-hour iron-air batteries in meeting the 24/7 energy needs of the AI economy. The batteries for this project will be made in America at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, West Virginia. 🇺🇸 Form Factory 1 has already started commercial production and is on track to reach a production capacity of 500 MW per year by 2028. We’re incredibly proud of this milestone and look forward to working with Xcel and Google to support a reliable, sustainable, and affordable electric grid — helping power the next generation of innovation. 🔋 See more from Xcel Energy: newsroom.xcelenergy.com/news/xcel-ener…

No comment on re-regulation. But hard agree on the second point: we need to start paying for more proactive grid infrastructure (incl. generation) via the tax base, rather than the rate base.

Perfectly said.

I'm in @TheFP arguing that data centers are not guzzling all of our water, nor are they jacking up our bills. Instead, they are revealing the severity of our industrial decline. The only way out is through; the only thing more expensive than growth is decay. 🔗⏬

The auction aims to provide 15-year revenue certainty for new power plants, whose cost will be allocated to load serving entities (LSEs) with new data centers that have not self-procured new capacity or agreed to be curtailable.
