Through regional planning processes, regions are investing substantially in new transmission. Some grid operators, such as MISO and SPP, have recently approved their largest ever regional transmission planning portfolios.

The DOE's Office of Electricity has released the latest National Transmission Needs Study for public comment. The draft report finds that significant transmission investment is needed to cost-effectively meet future demand through 2050. Key findings of the study include:

The DOE has closed on a $3.26B loan to finance transmission projects across Texas, including reconductoring of existing lines & construction of 2800 miles of new Tx. Fantastic use of the Energy Dominance Financing Program. We should be building more of the grid w/ public money.

Key highlights from the new @BerkeleyLabEMP data: Approx. 8,200 projects seeking interconnection, incl. 1,312 GW of gen + 749 GW of storage 10% decrease in total queue volume from 2024 Nat gas capacity in queues increased by 86%, while solar, storage, and wind all decreased.
EMP at Berkeley Lab@BerkeleyLabEMP

New data from @BerkeleyLab shows that the massive backlog of generation & storage interconnection requests has shrunk a bit, as reforms and other market factors take effect. See our slide deck, data dashboard, maps, and downloads at emp.lbl.gov/queues. THREAD!

@FelineCoder Yes! The federal government should have siting authority for interstate transmission lines - much as it already has for interstate pipelines.

Germany tried this halfway. Bundesnetzagentur plans, Länder permit. SuedLink and other HVDC: 10+ years delayed. Would this NTA actually have federal siting authority?
CleanEcon@CleanEconProj

As DC braces for a record-hot 4th, data centers & climbing temps are the most visible symptom of a grid that wasn't built for today's needs. The real fix is structural. An NTA can help plan, pay for, & build the system we need. @daniel_wolf1 outlines how: cleanecon.org/how-to-build-a…

The nuclear renaissance is here. The DOE, through @DOE_EDF, is greasing the skids for 10 more AP1000s by conditionally committing $17.5 billion for long lead items, like turbines or containment vessels. Invest today, build tomorrow. More to come.

Excellent new commentary from @ColumbiaUEnergy: "Where low-cost supply is available & existing infrastructure is efficiently utilized, additional demand can lower per-unit costs; where supply is constrained or capital needs are high, demand can raise prices."
Center on Global Energy Policy@ColumbiaUEnergy

Why are US electricity prices climbing? It’s not just data centers—it’s slow permitting and outdated grid incentives. Higher demand can lower per-unit costs, but only if we fix the underlying system, write CGEP scholars in this new commentary: energypolicy.columbia.edu/publications/e…

There is a very tricky thing happening right now in current US electricity policy rn. The convo is driven by large loads, but its a deeper multi-decade debate about how to grow the grid, and of course who pays. This will be pretty complex but wanted to give it a shot. /1

Today was an exciting day at @FERC as I joined my colleagues in issuing a unanimous, bipartisan response to @ENERGY Secretary Wright’s ANOPR on the Integration of Large Loads to the Bulk Power System.

Notably, Chairman Swett stated that nothing in today’s orders infringes upon existing state authority over generation & transmission siting or retail rates.

I think many people (myself included) were expecting a broader NOPR. This show cause approach is certainly faster, more targeted, and allows for regional variation (such as ongoing developments in SPP and PJM).

Major federal action on data centers! Today FERC issued six individualized show cause orders under Section 206 of the FPA directing each RTO/ISO to make changes to their processes for interconnecting large loads such as data centers.
