Through regional planning processes, regions are investing substantially in new transmission. Some grid operators, such as MISO and SPP, have recently approved their largest ever regional transmission planning portfolios.

The DOE's Office of Electricity has released the latest National Transmission Needs Study for public comment.
The draft report finds that significant transmission investment is needed to cost-effectively meet future demand through 2050.

The DOE has closed on a $3.26B loan to finance transmission projects across Texas, including reconductoring of existing lines & construction of 2800 miles of new Tx.

Approx. 8,200 projects seeking interconnection, incl. 1,312 GW of gen + 749 GW of storage
10% decrease in total queue volume from 2024
Nat gas capacity in queues increased by 86%, while solar, storage, and wind all decreased.

Germany tried this halfway. Bundesnetzagentur plans, Länder permit. SuedLink and other HVDC: 10+ years delayed. Would this NTA actually have federal siting authority?

There is a very tricky thing happening right now in current US electricity policy rn. The convo is driven by large loads, but its a deeper multi-decade debate about how to grow the grid, and of course who pays.
This will be pretty complex but wanted to give it a shot.

I think many people (myself included) were expecting a broader NOPR. This show cause approach is certainly faster, more targeted, and allows for regional variation (such as ongoing developments in SPP and PJM).

Major federal action on data centers!
Today FERC issued six individualized show cause orders under Section 206 of the FPA directing each RTO/ISO to make changes to their processes for interconnecting large loads such as data centers.
