running into some really dumb refusals today with seedance 2.0. #1: wouldn't make a shot of a guy spitting out toothpaste. maybe due to people simulating porn. #2: I have a start frame with the backs of AI people's heads and it is worried about likenesses

@sampullara Partly because OpenAI was very individual driven (and biased towards action) so very hard to align. Look across surfaces for evidence. Also, because they wanna catch-up to Claude revenue without being constrained. Lots to rebuild now, it prob will be.

New areas also take years to mature @ goog. In earlier eras, a team could secure enough funding to survive 3–5 years of iteration and refinement. There’s far less appetite for that now, which means more products ship half-baked and never get the runway needed to deliver.
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

Google’s internal incentives are to build new stuff to get rewarded/promo’d. Maintaining something existing is not that promo-worthy. It’s why every year there’s a new product for the same thing. Oh, migrating customers also not promo-worthy. Why Google is so chaotic

@simpsoka I think it's because the pace of technological change right now is historically unprecedented. Most of our priors served us extremely well for a long time, which is exactly why adapting this quickly is so difficult.

I don’t know why people talk in absolutes about agentic design. Especially for coders and builders. We just invented this stuff. It’s wild to think it won’t radically change over the next year. We’re at the very beginning.

@simpsoka @ajambrosino Did you all ever explore removing the browser runtime entirely and building with web-style primitives directly on top of Yoga → Dawn → Skia instead?

@sampullara @OfficialLoganK @DynamicWebPaige Because all they care about is the momentary flash of hype they can generate for themselves and their org so they can claim impact when perf rolls around. These folks are not serious and are just playing games. It’s really lame how much they are underserving their customers rn.

Gemini 3.5 feels like the start of a new era for Gemini, we spent the last 2.5 years putting the infrastructure, products, team, etc in place (learning lots of lessons along the way). The model is the product, please keep the feedback coming!

The bottleneck for iOS dev is truly the CPU now. It's hard to work on features in parallel and testing if the app is compiled locally.

@sampullara @praveen27 i dunno why i can't attest to something and allow it to pass all responsibility on to me. it's basically operating in a disabled nanny state.

this is why it is impossible to use google's creative ai tools for almost anything. the refusals are just constant and that hasn't changed with omni.

i am glad they are choosing a connectivity provider because of their retailing capability. maybe you will able to get free wifi if you agree to deliver a package at your destination.
Sawyer Merritt@SawyerMerritt

Delta Airlines CEO in new interview on why they chose Amazon Leo over @Starlink: “Amazon brings a lot more than just satellite technology. They bring great retailing capability and Amazon Prime and video gaming technologies, which Starlink does not have. I think the opportunities, in terms of the improved bandwidth with a much lower price point than what we’ve ever seen from Starlink, will make a big difference. Of course, we expect Starlink will be warning people that we’re going to go with an inferior product. But I’m not too worried about partnering with Amazon.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Early days but I’ve been building a cross-platform audio framework for standalone apps and plugins that can run React-based UI as fully native, GPU-accelerated interfaces without shipping a browser or WebView. danielraffel.me/2026/05/16/pul…

@simpsoka start with a cold install on a clean machine and focus on putting on the hat of a user who is not very technical. set up a clean VM and you will stumble on many confusing messages that make it tricky to get up and running quickly.

I suppose the one upside of running out of Codex Pro and Claude Max quota each week is that I am encouraged to test other models.

I've left OpenAI and the Codex team to build Blackstar: A new hardware company building the future of human-computer interaction. We believe that software is solved. Building apps is now easy, but the next meaningful improvement in human-AI communication requires changing the OS & hardware. That's why we're building a new device entirely. I'm also excited to announce our $12m seed round led by @AbstractVC, with participation from @naval, @SVAngel, @chapterone, and Timeless, among other amazing angels who've supported us from the old Alex days.

Wrote up Anthropic's self-own about Claude Code pricing from this afternoon on my blog - it turned out they'd reversed course just as I hit publish, so I've tried to update it to reflect the current state simonwillison.net/2026/Apr/22/cl…
