@soulohlove @ZipcarUK @Zipcar I thought the same had happened to me. The foot pedal can disappear right up where you can’t see it if pushed too much. I thought I was going mad!

See our No-Spin report on the Baby’s First Years RCT, studying the effects of providing unconditional cash transfers to low-income, new mothers in the US. In brief: This high-quality RCT found no impact on any of the study’s primary child development outcomes at 4y follow-up.🧵

@anon_opin Do you have some evidence to back this claim? Wife saying “I don’t know why you insisted you should drive?” Then fine. That’s not to say your opinion is always fact in every case. My sister-in-law insists she drives everywhere because she doesn’t like being a passenger for eg…

People need to stop being so precious about their cars. If I accidentally scuff or gently rock another car while parking, and it's bumper contact only with no marks or damage, I'm not leaving a note, and I'm not losing sleep over it. Bumpers are for bumping.

@matthiasman @anon_opin That’s a good strategy to get the best, brightest and most experienced people in our society to be MPs and solve our complex problems - pay them the same as the most junior McDonalds worker.

The 22 most annoying automated signs, alerts, emails and messages in Britain: 1. ‘This machine does not give change’ 2. ‘This machine charges for withdrawals’ 3. ‘Unexpected item in bagging area’ 4. ‘Using your own bag? Place in bagging area. An assistant is coming’ 5. ‘Your call is important to us’ 6. ‘Password not recognised/new password must not be same as old password’ 7. ‘Sorry we missed you’ 8. ‘We are experiencing an unexpectedly high volume of calls’ 9. ‘Please listen to the following options…’ (none of which involve speaking to a human) 10. ‘Our live chat digital assistant will respond to you shortly…’ 11. ‘You are caller number… 83… in the queue’ 12. ‘We are now closed, our opening hours are between 8am and 5pm’ (you’re calling at 4.30pm) 13. ‘Your delivery slot is between 5am and 11pm’ 14. ‘Item dispatched -> Item on the way -> Your delivery is next -> Delivery attempted -> Item lost’ 15. ‘Your parcel is with a neighbour’ 16. ‘Join our free Wi-Fi!’ (simply complete this form with all your personal information including full address and shoe size) 17. ‘Download our menu using the QR code’ 18. ‘Good news! We’ll auto renew your policy so you don’t have to do a thing!’ (btw it’s double the price now) 19. ‘When red light shows wait here’ (the roadworks finished a week ago) 20. Any smart motorway signs going from 70mph to 40 to 60 to 50 seemingly at random 21. ‘Changes to your monthly bill’ (it’s never lower, is it?) 22. ‘No Caller ID/Unknown Number’

I am not stupid enough not to know that. What I was trying to imply was that trials against the perpetrators of the real monstrous damages should take place and those should be punished. Thoughts on Floods and Heatwaves: The Imperative of Climate Responsibility The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as flood-causing rainfalls and drought-inducing heatwaves, is an unmistakable sign of Climate Change. This phenomenon, driven primarily by elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the earth’s atmosphere, has catastrophic implications for both the environment and human life. The root cause of this surge in atmospheric CO2 is the significant rise in the production and consumption of fossil fuels—coal, oil, and gas—since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The primary responsibility for Climate Change and its resulting extreme weather events lies squarely with the industries that extract and sell fossil fuels. The Coal, Oil, and Gas industries have been the main drivers of increased CO2 emissions, their activities deeply embedded in the fabric of modern industrial processes and energy consumption. However, the blame does not end with the fossil fuel producers. Industries that rely heavily on fossil fuels in their production processes also bear a significant share of responsibility. This includes steel producers, companies that generate electrical energy through fossil fuel combustion, and the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) auto industry. Their dependence on fossil fuels perpetuates the cycle of emissions, contributing to the ongoing climate crisis. Moreover, individual actions also play a part in this complex web of responsibility. Each person who uses fossil fuels for personal transport, heating, or other daily activities contributes to the overall carbon footprint. While the scale of individual contributions may be smaller, collectively they add up to a significant impact on the environment. Given this landscape of shared culpability, it is only just that those who have contributed to Climate Change—and thus to the extreme weather events and the consequent damages to infrastructure and human life—should also proportionally bear the costs for relief operations, reconstruction, and mitigation. The concept of proportional responsibility is essential for addressing the damages caused by these extreme events and for supporting recovery and adaptation efforts. A pioneering example of this approach can be seen in the US State of Vermont. Vermont has taken significant steps to allocate the costs of climate-related damages to those responsible for increased CO2 emissions. By implementing policies that ensure polluters pay for the consequences of their actions, Vermont sets a precedent for other regions and countries to follow. In closing, it is worth noting that almost all the entities responsible for climate change—industries and individuals alike—are, to varying degrees, adherents of the global Cult of G2 (Growth and Greed). This ideology prioritises economic expansion and profit maximisation over environmental sustainability and ethical responsibility. To address Climate Change effectively, a fundamental shift in values towards sustainability and accountability is imperative. The call to action is clear: those who have contributed to the crisis must now contribute to its resolution. By adopting measures that hold industries and individuals accountable, we can begin to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

ppl still making ill-informed comments about the sentencing of a group of UK climate activists who went to jail for several years for blocking the M25 motorway seem to not realize they were jailed because what they had intended to do would have been much worse than what they achieved Even so the economic damage was considerable and affected hundreds of thousands of people. If they had been successfull it'd have been millions. It was sheer luck that no one was seriously injured or killed You can read the entire sentencing remarks from the judge here judiciary.uk/wp-content/upl… I don't know much about the German legal system let alone the UK one so I can't tell whether that sentence is too long or too short or how it compares to similar cases and whatnot. But someone who clearly didn't follow the case calling me a Nazi for saying that a British judge had a point saying that this was not a vanilla disobedience illustrates very nicely why twitter is such a shitplace

The commentary on BBC is horrific! I haven't listened to see if it's the same commentary on the radio, but it certainly seems that way when watching it. Cutting costs by broadcasting the same commentry on both platforms. It doesn't work if that's the case #BBC #EURo2024
