Blockchains have always been and always will be tech for finance. Their core purpose is financialization. That’s why architecting a chain to protect unification of liquidity is more important than practically anything else. I am happy the misadventures around things like gaming in particular are fully dead and over. More broadly, I felt the “read write own” / web3 articulation was too skeuomorphic and, frankly, intellectually lazy to transpire because new tech is never as simple as putting something on a blockchain and voila. You have to create new markets. This narrative functioned more as a fig leaf for a reason to put VC dollars into more unnecessary infrastructure to rationalize a desire to create a private asset that could become magical internet money. The more folks that launched projects to attract price based on selling a narrative to the wild Wild West of internet liquidity, the harder the legitimizing narrative machine worked to ascribe value to all this as the third coming of apps - “all the stuff you do today, but now it pays you” In reality, the opportunity is immense, and bigger than our most creative minds can imagine, but not as it’s been articulated over the last few years. This blockchain adventure has always been about finance: open financial rails for anyone and everyone on the internet. This makes it newly possible for capital formation and internet formation to happen anywhere in the world, and for the ensuing innovation and progress to take hold. Open finance enables greater economic freedom and with it individual sovereignty and agency.

1/ sRFC 38 defines version 1 of off-chain message signing for Solana. It removes legacy constraints that made preparing messages for hardware wallet signing confusing and standardizes a format that works across all signing devices. Here's what changed and why it matters 🧵

no matter how much people hate on ethereum or the EF, at least you can say it out loud, criticize & be vocal when you don't agree with something openly, without fear. can’t say the same about any other ecosystem right now.

Yeah, jito takes a small fee, then the rest are sent to the validator/block builder. This amount is then shared w stakers/token holders according to that validators jito commission. Can see individuals jito commission on stakewiz.com, most are around 0-5%. So almost all tips are distributed to staked token holders.

It’s both admirable and frustrating how Solana dominates every metric narrative - and how easily it does so. First fake TPS capacity. Then “optimistic” block time. Now fake revenue. The next cycle is all about revenue and will be interesting to see if they can get away with a good narrative only. x.com/i/status/20020…

Learning about 'fiscal sponsorship' and I think this would be a *really* powerful thing for @SolanaFndn or similar to run for the ecosystem. This is like the exact vision of what I think Network States can be *great* at. Fiscal sponsorship is a partnership where a nonprofit (the sponsor) lends its tax-exempt status to a project or group without its own 501(c)(3) status, allowing the project to receive tax-deductible donations and grants while focusing on its mission, with the sponsor handling financial oversight and admin in exchange for a fee. It's a fast, cost-effective way for new initiatives (like artists, social ventures) to operate charitably, avoiding the lengthy process of forming their own nonprofit, often using Models A (comprehensive) or C (re-granting). This would allow entities like @oniondao_ , others to spin up and operate without significant overhead themselves

Great recap of an amazing week at Breakpoint!
Nick Almond@DrNickA

On my way home from Breakpoint. A few reflections on the event and Solana generally 👇 This was my first Breakpoint and I have to say, I was incredibly impressed. The production values are about as good as I’ve seen them. It’s impeccably organised and incredibly well curated. I sat and watched like 12 hours of content, at least, across the 3 days and it was all very high quality. Short punchy product and tech updates and with some quirky debate style formats that were fun. The vibes were really great. A few others have pointed this out, but it is a younger more enthusiastic crowd than your typical Ethereum conference. And it does somehow feel more inclusive and open. Outside of a Bonk dog here and there, it is completely un-degen. In fact, I am constantly surprised by how hardcore engineering focussed and technical a lot of Solana discourse is. The MEV Day and Block Zero mini-confs before Breakpoint were two of the highest alpha meetings I’ve ever been to. There are strong memes at the ecosystem level, Internet Capital Markets, IBRL etc these permeate all the talks and actually shape the tech materially. The forthcoming upgrades including Alpenglow, MCP and Jito’s BAM are all genuinely exiting advancements of frontier blockchain tech that are genuinely pushing the space forward. It has not, so far at least, turned into an insane side event slop bonanza. This has frankly got a bit silly in recent years with projects blowing eye watering sums of money playing swanky booze bribery attention games. All the events I went to here were ran as collaborations, sponsored and co-organised by several ecosystem projects rather than singular “look at me” type deals. Generally, this is the vibe I see across the ecosystem. It’s a more “we’re in it together” non-zero mentality than the more fragmented tangential ecosystem L2 and piggybacking alt-L1 city scale mega confs that the likes of ETHCC and Devcon have turned in to. I could probably make the argument that this is a kind of sociotechnical reification of the more monolithic architecture of the chain, but I’ll save you the anthropology. In any case, I like it. I’ve been to other chain specific conferences before for “contender” L1s and they feel much smaller, closed and niche than this. There is a kind of scale but focussed, massive but coherent thing going on that’s really rather interesting. Generally, I’m having a lot of fun in the Solana eco. It’s been the most high octane full throttle year of my career, the work is interesting, engaging, challenging but fun. I get to hang out and work with the Jito team who are just incredible, talented people and just generally super nice to be around. I’ve also got to work at the protocol level itself on the “Solana Constitution” governance framework and met a huge amount of the validators, foundation team and key stakeholders across the eco. Everyone is just strikingly high competence and hungry to win. It’s everything you’d want to see at the frontier of this emerging technology. Regardless of token prices this is all exceptionally bullish IMO. trillions
