Many commentators discuss Andes virus on MV Hondius with reference to the entire genus of hantaviruses that causes diseases in humans. This is an egregious error, equivalent to discussing SARS-CoV-2 with reference to the entire genus of betacoronaviruses.

And this is exactly what I've been saying happens in a pandemic with 40+% mortality. Everything breaks down. Anarchy. People not getting things. They are setting fire to the hospital (the last place you would want to set a fire to). Supply chains break fast. You need to have rational thinking and backup plans to supply-chain dependent medical interventions. Some people think that government mandates are the thing to fear in another pandemic. It's not overbearing law enforcement but rather lawlessness.

In the absence of USAID, I wish Canada & other countries would step up & take a leadership role in managing the Ebola outbreak in Congo Starting w N95s & other PPE for everyone involved There is no time to waste

@jakescottMD Ebola is a disease of poverty, violence and corruption. It will not spread beyond Africa, simply because the word "Ebola" evokes so much fear that rich countries like the US will take extraordinary measures to keep it out, and to truly isolate cases and suspected cases.

Robert Redfield predicting a “very significant pandemic” from this Ebola outbreak misstates the basic epidemiology. Filoviruses spread through direct contact with bodily fluids from symptomatic patients; even the 2013–16 West Africa outbreak that killed ~11,300 people remained a regional epidemic. Cross-border spread is a real concern worth preparing for, but pandemic is the wrong word.

A very good question! “On the Fraser Health Facebook page, a person asked: ‘…is there a solution in sight or is this just the new norm now, that it’s acceptable to be closing multiple hospitals to births every Thursday till Tuesday for eternity?’”
Kim@Kimscape

"a maternity diversion will be in place from Thursday, May 21 at 8 a.m. until Monday, May 25 at 8 a.m. Fraser Health advises that if you are in labour or have a pregnancy concern, please call the maternity unit at 604-463-4111..." mapleridgenews.com/2026/05/20/mat…

Lots of AI imagery around now, a really big change since past virus outbreaks I've watched from the social media sidelines. I try to make graphics that are 'mine' but there are certainly easier & faster ways to make infographics than the stupidly intensive hands-on way I do it!

"The resulting back-and-forth delayed Stafford’s evacuation and treatment because 'they would not allow him to be transported to the United States,' said one individual familiar with the response."

As someone who ran an #Ebola Treatment Unit during the 2014 West Africa outbreak, I’m honestly not sure what an “Ebola response clinic” is supposed to mean. When Ebola is suspected, patients need rapid isolation and high-quality supportive care — IV fluids, oxygen, pain control, monitoring — ideally in a dedicated treatment center with trained staff, proper IPC infrastructure, laboratory support, and the workforce required to safely run these facilities 24/7. state.gov/releases/offic…

@danwalker9999 That is ONE guy with an opinion. Kind of like you, except also not because Boisen does have expertise & knows Lassa virus is not Ebola virus. He is describing conditions for handling clinical samples, not doing pathogenesis studies.

Literally no Ebola expert ever said “less PPE is better”. Workers were forced to wear surgical masks because they didn’t have access to respirators. They are forced to do so again because USAID cut funds, not because of this silly invented controversy
Raina MacIntyre@Globalbiosec

Transmission of #Ebola is being debated yet again. In the catastrophic West African epidemic in 2014, health workers were forced to work in surgical masks and many got infected. Medical journals refused to publish us, instead, publishing articles saying "less PPE is better". A nursing journal published us, because #nurses are at the frontline 1/2 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
