@Anarfea different conventions for different genres. YA almost always is 1st, fanfic almost always 3rd. Romance readers today grew up on YA, not fanfic, so they prefer 1st. (Historically both were common in Romance.)

This is wild to me. 10 years ago, everything was in 3rd person, and everyone hated 1st person because it was cringe

(Let me clarify that this is a JOKE, in the original draft that I should have stuck with I added that Heathcliff made his fortune in the all-male brothel from Herman Melville’s “Redburn”)

I think this is true until Heathcliff returns to Yorkshire with his mysterious fortune. I think he knows what sex is when he comes back and that's why he and Cathy are no longer speaking the same language.
James F. Thomas (of IDLEWILD)@james_f_thomas

sexy Wuthering Heights feels like a miscategorization of the novel's libidinal energy. Cathy and Heathcliff might not even know where babies come from, but they would invent something way more fucked up than sex. like eating each other, or pooping back and forth forever

@danziger_ross The adoption of "entree" for the main is so bizarre because it's not an impenetrable French word, it's very close to an English word whose meaning is clear. Plus, ofc, that we adopted not just an erroneous use, it's basically the opposite!

While we're talking about dining vocabulary: "Entree" quite obviously means something related to "beginning." It's an appetizer/starter. In Spanish, those are "entradas." American English needs a better term for "main plate." (In Mexico, they say "platos fuertes," strong plates.)
Deva Hazarika@devahaz

“Plate” is the real debate in the original probably made up post because plate is not commonly used like that for nice restaurants. Is that $100 entree cost? Food? Cover per person? When I hear per plate price it’s usually like a wedding dinner or a bbq combo plate price.

@adup512 I have the same issue! And there's no acknowledgement in the book that any kind of taco exists other than taco-kit style.

I have trouble reading "Dragons Love Tacos" (which is cute) to my kid because it celebrates terrible tacos: default hard tacos (crunchy can be good, but they're the exception), virulently anti-spicy, very gringo toppings. I know I'm being ridiculous.

Her gender essentialism can be so flexible; the murder (says the inspector) was committed by a woman, a category which can also accommodate a man with a “female streak” (here, a sinister and effeminate unmarried antique-collector, one of Christie’s favorite Types)

Very funny moment in this Agatha Christie novel (“The Moving Finger”); she’s a great plot-writer but also deeply incurious about the world around her and so her novels just transmit huge globs of raw ideology, undigested (this makes her interesting to read imo)

@cupcakeandy I can't believe they're being such babies about this. Why are you in this business if you don't love movies?

@molochofficial @kirbyaddict94 I know he loved women, obviously, but that dude had SO much sex in his life that there had to be a dick or two in there somewhere. Is my personal and unshakeable belief.

the greatest musical movie is Cabaret (1972) and the really surprising thing about that movie is that the director and cast (sans Joel Grey) were all straight (Liza was born to be the Gay Messiah but is not herself gay in the sense in which Jesus was not a "Christian")
becky.@djrtyhands

what’s your favorite musical movie but you CAN’T say tick tick boom, hamilton, wonka, wicked, la la land, les mis, mamma mia and the greatest showman (this is actually just mee needing more movie!musical recs)
