“El imaginario simbólico de la IA actual es ideológico. En un extremo tenemos visiones de “abundancia radical” y en el otro, encontramos cosmologías del miedo donde el silencio es la única estrategia de supervivencia ante una superinteligencia.”

Today we celebrate Economist Day in Mexico. Economic education still has a long way to go in my country, and I’m happy to contribute whatever I can to spreading basic economic ideas, both as an amateur teacher of economic history and as a writer at FEE. I still believe in the power of education and heed Ludwig von Mises’s call to help civilians understand the basics of economics as a civic duty, essential for the preservation of individual freedom. People often ask me for book recommendations. Many are eager to learn the fundamental principles of our discipline but don’t know where to start. Books like Thomas Sowell’s Basic Economics or Cowen and Tabarrok’s Modern Principles of Economics are great introductions. Classics like Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson are especially aimed at lay readers, while other gems such as Heyne’s The Economic Way of Thinking are well worth exploring. But one book, University Economics, holds a particularly dear place in my heart. I truly learned economics years after completing my bachelor’s degree. Helping others see how basic economic reasoning could illuminate their everyday experiences led me to explore how great economists communicated their ideas. I was then an avid reader of Donald Boudreaux’s Cafe Hayek blog, where he frequently urged economists to read Armen Alchian. By a stroke of luck, I found a copy of Alchian and Allen’s Exchange and Production—the microeconomics portion of University Economics—in a small bookstore on Donceles Street in Mexico City, a place full of hidden treasures. University Economics—which I’m holding in the picture here—remains one of the most profound textbooks I’ve ever read. Few modern works rival its clarity and insight. Alchian and Allen offer a brilliant definition of economics, something like: “Economics studies the competitive and cooperative behavior of people who strive to resolve the conflicts of interest that arise from scarcity.” Within that single sentence lie all the essentials: competition, cooperation, conflict, human action, and scarcity. This definition, in my view, surpasses Lionel Robbins’s more familiar focus on allocation. For Alchian and Allen, economics is not merely about efficient allocation: it is about the human drama of cooperation, competition, and conflict that drives daily economic life. If I am an economist worthy of any celebration today, it is because I have learned from the wisdom of great masters. Happy Economist Day to all my colleagues and teachers in Mexico.

"They say art is a window to the soul. But for Walter Peter Brenner, internationally recognized Guatemalan sculptor whose work can be found in private collections, business centers, universities, schools, and even private cities, art is also a vehicle for philosophy. Walter has dedicated more than 40 years to monumental sculpture to represent his worldview, one rooted in liberty. In 2024, that worldview and his art found its way into some important rooms in the world when he presented two Atlas-holding-the-world bronze sculptures." - @daphneposadas

Ganar una Copa del Mundo es un logro enorme, pero son muchos los futbolistas que lo han conseguido a lo largo de la historia. Concretamente, 471. Te suenan los nombres de Peter Bonetti, Felice Borel, Paul Mebus o Virginio Rosetta? No?
