Had this conversation with a mate the other day. It’s not just the games. Which are hands down nowhere near as enjoyable as they were pre covid and pre VAR. It’s also the players. How many of today’s elite players are we going to talk about in 20/30 years? Kane? Mbappe? De Bruyne?Lamine Yamal? Compare that to how many we talk about today from 10/20 years ago. Messi & Ronaldo. Ronaldinho. Rivaldo. Pirlo. Xavi. Iniesta. R9. Figo. Kaka. Zidane. David Silva. Neymar. Aguero. Batistuta. Henry. And how many of those wouldn’t be utilised in the modern day because they aren’t athletic enough or they don’t run enough or don’t follow managers strict game plans. Football is no longer about flair and entertainment. It’s about margins and lines being drawn on the pitch. It’s not about risk. It’s about instructions. It’ll never be the same again unfortunately and we just have to accept that. But I’m pretty sure in 20 years the popularity of the sport will have declined. Because it’s no longer the free flowing game it once was
