The story of Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson, and the creation of C and UNIX, is fascinating, bizarre, hysterically funny, and overwhelmingly ironic. It all starts with a canceled project, an underused PDP7, and the desire to play space war. You can read about their world changing adventures in We, Programmers. Which is also out on audiobook now. a.co/d/0cBihysK

Dennis Ritchie created C in the early 1970s without Google, Stack Overflow, GitHub, or any AI ( Claude, Cursor, Codex) assistant. - No VC funding. - No viral launch. - No TED talk. - Just two engineers at Bell Labs. A terminal. And a problem to solve. He built a language that fit in kilobytes. 50 years later, it runs everything. Linux kernel. Windows. macOS. Every iPhone. Every Android. NASA’s deep space probes. The International Space Station. > Python borrowed from it. > Java borrowed from it. > JavaScript borrowed from it. If you have ever written a single line of code in any language, you did it in Dennis Ritchie’s shadow. He died in 2011. The same week as Steve Jobs. Jobs got the front pages. Ritchie got silence. This Legend deserves to be celebrated.

“static typing catches bugs before they wreck production…” The bugs caught by static typing are the same that are caught by running the code - first by unit testing (right?). Static typing has benefits but bug prevention isn’t one.
Damien White@Visoft

TypeScript's static typing catches bugs before they wreck your production environment. Yet so many teams still skip it and pay the price later. Strong typing isn't optional, it's foundational. Are you building with it? 🔧

Has anyone loaded Omarchy on a Surface Book 2? Windows 11 stinks. This laptop with a Microsoft logo needs something else.

@housecor The problem I see with null propagators is that devs don’t test them. They inject them thinking they’re adding safety, not understanding that they’re a hidden conditional.

I'm reviewing a codebase with over 750 uses of optional chaining. Example: user?.email I continue to believe adding this feature to JS was a mistake. It encourages lazy, sloppy, brittle, ambiguous code.

@vongillern I saw those things, I was worried about how the metal would feel against my fingers instead of the soft plastic of the pop socket.

@vongillern What I wish more people were talking about was the pressure the govt put on Twitter and other social media. So much bigger than what’s happening now…

@vongillern Haha I was just showing this video to my wife! I fast forwarded through much of the attack, it’s vicious, he should go to prison. But what I did show is that at the end, the other side got on top of the unconscious body to get the 3-count.

@vongillern Me too, it’s exactly that: Blood Boiling. Especially him afterwards, standing around that horrific scene. I think he blames them.

"This problem is irreducible; it cannot be done in phases, small steps, or increments. It can only be done all at once." I have bad news for you -- in order to write the code you have to enter one line at a time, one tiny bit at once.
