A landmark reform. The reduction of GST rates to just 5% and 18% is a bold and visionary step. Simplifying the structure, rationalising rates and eliminating inverted duties will boost consumption, raise capacity utilisation, and drive fresh investment. This, in turn, will fuel job creation, lift household incomes, and trigger a virtuous cycle of growth. At this critical juncture, this reform gives India’s economy renewed momentum. It was an honour to speak at the Vedica Vani event, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Vedica Scholars Programme for Women—an altar of learning where ambitious, capable women can unfurl their potential and stride towards leadership. “Going back to the Vedas is akin to going back to a luminous future” is a guiding principle I hold dear, reminding us that our civilisational wisdom can illuminate new frontiers for women across professional domains. Drawing on my own story as one of the youngest to join the Indian Foreign Service, I underscored that “merit is what you develop with hard work—it is not privilege or elitism,” and emphasised the sacred duty each generation of women owes to the next: to conquer fresh ground, demolish barriers, and hand over an expanded realm of possibilities. Reflecting on why women’s leadership is so invaluable—particularly in diplomacy—I highlighted our capacity to blend realism and idealism, conjure bridges instead of walls, and add a dimension of empathy to hard negotiations. There is a vital need for women to be present and vocal at every decision-making table, not only as a matter of principle but because we possess the resilience and strategic insight to herald sustainable solutions. Through Vedica and similar transformative programmes, I am confident that more women will step forward as pioneers, claiming their rightful space in shaping a fairer, more inclusive future—one guided by the luminous wisdom of our past.
