1) the U.S. should currently be banned from all international sporting events 2) not being afraid of a degradation in skating quality is an incredibly privileged position which is only possible due to federation support that provides a comfortable scoring cushion

Make it to the Olympics and be the 12th best skater out of 8 billion people in the world, and you win nothing. Be the 12th best plumber in a city of 1 million people, and you are set for life. Life is a game. Be careful which games you play.

@alreadydawn Government encourages=/= to actual demand from students, the subjects you just listed have much higher gaokao grades than the ones CCP see as priority, reflective of the demand.

China's best and brightest are encouraged to study hard sciences, real engineering, and math. Not "computer science" and biz/finance in Murica. This is what a real country looks like.

Very interesting display of priority ranking for disciplines in China. Materials Science is absurdly high. Control of matter. > Information and Communication Engineering that's Wenfeng's degrees > followed by Marxist Theory that's probably for CCP cadres lol

I wonder if HMRC will investigate how Peter Mandelson is worth tens of millions of pounds… Of course they won’t. He’ll be protected, like all the other politicians that somehow gain many millions whilst on a few hundred grand a year max.

@alz_zyd_ ENS produces researchers. Chinese IMO gold medalists go into quant finance or A.I. for the giant bag of cash. France has Fields medalists, but top AI scientists are all from China, USA or Poland. Different focus, different results.

France has more Fields medalists than any other country in Europe, but performs extremely poorly on the IMO. Countries like Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria do very well on the IMO, but don't have a single Fields medal. Why?

So the alledged "Labour figure" joining Reform next week isn't Graham Stringer (he denied yesterday) and Rosie Duffield (she posted anti Reform stuff yesterday). Other names are Hoey (even though she is inde) and Lord Glasman. Can't see it being Glasman - 50 yrs in Lab.

@GodfreeTrh Isn't it common knowledge that china focuses heavily on applied research (as opposed to foundational/ applied research) hence ranking highly in 'applied sciences ' is probably not surprising.

@JosephPConlon @annaperryparis @botzarelli Hate to be that guy.... But given increasingly strong link between music abilities and maths skills. Grade 8 on instrument might not be the best example of an irrelevant extra curric.... The great man himself was known for his love of the violin...

@annaperryparis @botzarelli Not discourage. But why -- for a physics degree -- should I give extra credit to someone demonstrating work ethic/time management skills via grade 8 violin (say) compared to via working in MaccyDs every weekend because the family need the extra money?

I wouldn't be surprised if it is different in humanities, but in physics I think the very highest quality applicants (~ top 2-3% of the Oxford applicant pool) tend to come more from the state sector. This may sound surprising but I think there are good reasons for it. 1/7

A Cambridge University college will target private school kids for recruitment in order to improve the “quality” of students applying. Trinity College Cambridge will approach private schools like Eton, Winchester and St Paul’s Girls, after concerns that attempts to improve social mobility had resulted in “reverse discrimination”. The college’s “targeted recruitment strategy” will approach around 50 private schools, most of which charge over £25,000 a year. According to the Guardian, Trinity Hall's director of admissions Marcus Tomalin wrote a memo saying, "the best students from such schools arrive at Cambridge with expertise and interests that align well with the intellectual demands” of the subjects. “To ignore or marginalise this pool of applicants would risk overlooking potential offer holders who are not only exceptionally well qualified but who have been encouraged to engage critically and independently with their subjects in a way that Cambridge has historically prized. “It is important that the crucial task of securing greater fairness in admissions does not unintentionally result in reverse discrimination.” Trinity Hall staff and social mobility experts have reacted with alarm to the policy.

Kamikaze diplomacy from Kuo Min Tang considering Taiwan's existence as an independent state is heavily dependent on Western goodwill and the West's willingness to support Taipei in the face of an increasingly assertive China.
Yaroslav Trofimov@yarotrof

Taiwan’s Kuo Min Tang — which controls nearly half of the island’s parliament seats — now adopts the Putin view of the war in Ukraine. A notable data point for Western policy makers.

@lukejcr Well someone needs to make the @bankofengland accountable! Bailey has failed big time in keeping to the 2% CPI mandate by cutting rates while CPI has rise . This irresponsibility should have resulted in his sacking!!!

Well, surprise surprise. Reform want control of the police and the Bank of England. They don’t like independence — they fear it, and it’s a step in a dangerous direction. Only Labour’s putting power back where it belongs: with the British people. 🌹
Alex Wickham@alexwickham

Exclusive: Nigel Farage floats replacing Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey in a sign he could interfere with the Bank’s independence if he becomes prime minister. “He’s had a good run. We might find someone new,” Farage tells @MishalHusain, whose hour-long interview with the Reform leader goes live on Bloomberg today. Bailey’s term is up in 2028 but it’s Farage’s clearest indication yet that he’d emulate Trump in applying political pressure on the BOE. In the full news-packed Bloomberg interview, Farage: — suggests he’d abolish the Financial Conduct Authority: “They are utterly useless.” — disowns the 2024 Reform manifesto: “I didn’t write it. I inherited it. We’re having a full rethink of everything.” — says Reform will “probably go further” than the £50 billion of spending cuts pledged last time round, eyeing in particular the “explosion” in disability welfare cuts. — vows “more radical” economic policies than in the manifesto. “We’re gonna make even bigger promises.” Timeline for lifting income tax threshold to £20,000 will come within weeks along with other new announcements on the economy. — praises Trump’s ICE deportation raids but says “we’ll do it our way, not the American way.” No army or armed agents. — pledges to “play hardball” with the EU to renegotiate the Brexit deal and “100%” end “catastrophic” alignment. — says he is “struggling a bit” with his Anglican faith, adding that “if I was a more regular church goer, I probably would have defected to the Catholics” — says he’d be a risk-taking and at times divisive PM. “Everything in life’s about risk. We need far more risk/taking… I think we’ve had too many unifiers and look, look where consensus politics has got us. Look at the mess it’s got us into. Of course, some people won’t like it, but that’s the way it is.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Just looks like someone is trying to forget 30 years of appeasing Russia. - Calling Putin the leader you most admire - Regular appearances on Russia Today - Blaming the West for the Ukraine invasion - Turning a blind eye to Nathan Gill’s pro-Russian speeches whilst you were his leader - Ignoring 3 other MEPs doing the same - Lying about meeting the Russian Ambassador - Reform UK taking donations from multiple people with Russian assets and connections You take the British public for mugs.

Yesterday I visited @BloombergUK in London. If Russian planes encroach over NATO territory, Britain should shoot them down.
