It's building more infrastructure that requires the dollar. More US LNG → more dollar-denominated energy trade. More sanctions risk → more dollar-clearing dependency. More geopolitical fear → more dollar safe-haven flows. De-dollarization is a direction. Not a destination anyone is arriving at. The petrodollar is the foundation of American power. Since the 1970s, oil has only been sold in dollars, forcing every nation on earth to hold dollars, fund our debt, and keep us dominant. Iran just systematically dismantled that. They closed Hormuz, cutting 25% of global oil supply. Spiked oil to $118 a barrel. Then forced ships to pay in Chinese yuan for passage. Now Gulf states are dumping US treasuries, bond markets are selling off, inflation is surging, Deutsche Bank is warning of a petroyuan era. Every link in the petrodollar chain is snapping at once. When it's gone, your borrowing costs explode, your savings erode, and America loses the financial weapon that has kept us dominant for 50 years. China wins without ever pulling a trigger.

If the UK joined the US as the 51st state. We would be the poorest state in the entire union. Mississippi which is portrayed at swamp dwelling hillbillies in majority of international media is above us. I don’t think people grasp how far we’ve fallen in real terms when it comes to GDP per capita. We’ve seen no growth for almost an entire generations. We’ve seen our productivity decrease and our tax increases. The average person on the UK, on £50,000 is less well off than your average Mississippi swamp dweller.

Big paper I have been waiting for: what are the real impacts of AI on programmer productivity? It is a randomized controlled trial using the older, less-powerful GPT-3.5 powered Github Copilot for 4,867 coders in Fortune 100 firms. It finds a 26.08% increase in completed tasks.

Cursor/Claude shitposting aside, I don’t think people outside of SF tech circles quite understand just how much more productive certain engineers are becoming with LLMs. AI is becoming not just a tool but a full extension of the human brain and body. Engineers are easily getting 2-5x productivity increases over a wide range of tasks, by more wholly embracing LLM-written code and working at higher levels of abstraction. Sure it can result in buggy code, sure this is mostly only possible if you work in small-ish codebases, sure I don’t think it’s yet a “silver bullet” in the Fred Brooks sense. But there are certainly many startups that would be completely unable to do their eng work without embracing what I call "cyborg engineering" (Exa included, although we’re still super understaffed so pls join us)
