california, despite surface level being a Mediterranean clime paradise, is vaguely inhospitable to human life

78 firefighters — including Chumash tribal firefighters — are battling California's largest wildfire of the year on Santa Rosa Island, home to species found nowhere else on Earth. This is federally-managed land and these crews are working hard. The question is whether the Trump administration, which gutted the Forest Service by 16% and left it in disarray, has given them everything they need.

Director Christopher Nolan brought 60 Minutes to Fotokem in Burbank, California, to watch their artists assemble and color correct final release prints of “The Odyssey.” It's the only motion picture film lab in the world that still produces 70 millimeter prints. Nolan told Scott Pelley, “It’s a really marvelous thing to see… in this age of digitization, AI, all the rest, this is a human process. An analog process.”

NYT in new article: "Early reviews of the @Tesla Semi suggest that it could be a much-needed hit for the company. And it could shake up the staid business of truck manufacturing in the same way that Tesla’s cars upended the auto industry. Demand for the Semi appears strong. California trucking firms have asked the state government for subsidies to help them buy more than 1,200 Tesla trucks. That’s more than all the applications for other electric trucks since the state’s incentive program began in 2019." Ivan Torres, a driver for Nevoya, a San Francisco-based trucking company, is a big fan of the Semi. He said the Semi was quieter than diesel rigs. And he can run the air-conditioning while waiting to drop off a load. That is sometimes not possible with diesel trucks because California limits how long those vehicles can idle in residential areas or near schools and hospitals to minimize pollution. It will also be cheeper to operate. Diesel prices have risen around 50% in the last couple months, making battery power more attractive. Electricity is much cheaper per mile, even in California, where utility rates are relatively high.

Matt's correct. 1. Boosting Venezuelan production is unlikely to affect global oil supply, as we're already in an oversupplied, demand-limited market. 2. It will weaken OPEC some. 3. But it will hurt US shale drillers much more. VZ oil production costs are estimated at $20-30/bl, similar to the high end of OPEC (and far above the low end). US production costs are maybe $40-70/bl. US oil drillers are going to suffer long before OPEC.

America's fastest-growing cities are all in exurbs, and that's not going to change. Urbanists have two choices: 1) pretend this is not the case (2) recognize that the only way to make these projects better is to invent and prove a new, different model, like @CAForever.

Tangentially, but Monet was probably one of the biggest slop painter of his era and, by all means, managed to help transform the entire art world.
