There’s a phenomenal intimidation factor from the world directed toward Christians when it comes to the age of the earth. I’ve heard over and over again that people who reject the supposed millions/billions of years for the age of the earth and universe are anti-intellectual, anti-scientific, and anti-academic. This intimidation is so great that the majority of Christian academics compromise with the millions of years. Personally, I believe it comes down to an intellectual pride problem. If an academic rejects the millions of years, they won’t be published in what are deemed the mainstream journals in theology or science. Now for biblical creationists, the age of the earth is an issue that should lead Christians to a different kind of strong emotion—a real zeal for the authority and accuracy of the Word of God. Ultimately, the issue of the age of the earth/universe is an authority issue. Who is the ultimate authority? Fallible, finite man or God?
