👋 @geordinhl I've been trying to work out how you calculated that 75% of your infrastructure budget 'directly benefits lower income households' I have the extracts you sent to @AfricaCheck + your full budget, but I just can't see how you worked it out. Can you please share?

Here is a puzzle. People in sub-Saharan Africa tend to be *twice* as religious as the rest of the world, yet countries in the region provide *half* as much state support for religion. Why? Hint: It isn't about state capacity.
The Conversation Africa@TC_Africa

David Jeffery-Schwikkard’s research reveals sub-Saharan Africa’s devout populations receive minimal state support for religion. These findings unsettle many common misconceptions about the role of religion in politics. theconversation.com/deeply-religio… 💻 @KingsCollegeLon #Politics

I've moved over to the other social media site (uh, the one with a colour in its name). I've made a 'starter pack' there of accounts that cover SA politics. Come join and be part of the list!

My key worry about constituency systems is still (a) that their main argument is local accountability, but (b) unless you increase the number of MPs, you have 150,000 - 300,000 people per MP, which defeats the point. And increasing the number of MPs is🤢.

My ignorance @Tessa_Dooms @Themb_Mazi! I hadn't realised that in MMP, list MPs could be used to *entirely* counter-balance the distortion of FTFP - my apologies. My original🧵was meant as an exploration of MK's support, but I spoke too confidently about MMP.

I've updated my imagined demarcation of South Africa into 200 single-member constituencies for 2024. Interactive map with more data at constmap.frith.dev Blog post with explanation at adrian.frith.dev/single-member-…

@davidjefferySA That is true. The alternative of expanding the size of the National Assembly would of course be immensely unpopular with everyone except the prospective MPs.

@adrianfrith Super interesting! Thanks for sharing. My worry with a mixed system is that it means constituencies need to be huge, which then dilutes the value of a constituency system. For 200 constituency seats, that's 300,000 people per constituency MP.

I like this. Minister of Sport - not just a focus on semi/professional teams, but also general health and wellness. Although a marathon with a month of training... we might have a new min soon. [...also I have no time for @GaytonMcK's ill-informed, inhumane xenophobia, etc.]
Gayton McKenzie@GaytonMcK
