105 YEARS AGO, THE CREATION OF NORTHERN IRELAND
On the 3rd May 1921, 105 years ago, Northern Ireland came into being as a consequence of the Government of Ireland Act 1920.
The Act had received Royal Assent on 23 December 1920, and came into effect on this day, 3 May in 1921.
It established a Home Rule institution for Northern Ireland, and another for Southern Ireland. Southern Ireland was to split away to form the Irish Free State in 1922, while the institution set up for Northern Ireland continued until suspended in 1972 due to the Troubles.
The Northern Ireland Coat of Arms shows a Lion and a Stag, and the motto "Quis Separabit" which means "Who Shall Separate Us? - derived from Romans 8:35 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?"
