This book is not a “how-to” guide for spiritual formation or a manual for better discipleship. Following Jesus is not a status to “achieve” or a program you can master. As the texts we examine will reveal, it is an invitation to attend, to listen to the God already with you.

Our new book is out now on Amazon: “Hearing in the Dark: Reflections on Christian Spiritual Formation.” It’s our attempt to track how the Bible guides us to follow Christ more closely - to do Spiritual Formation as the gospels introduce us to it. a.co/d/04uSyZOj

Some ministry news I wish to share. These are very normal things. And, in this case, concerns a plan that’s been in place for several years. We just didn’t want a 3-year farewell. Lol. That would be a bit much. The letter I wrote beneath the video on YouTube will also help explain. Not retiring. Just laying aside some of the heavier responsibilities so I can spend my last chapter teaching, speaking and writing but not overseeing a busy ministry. I won’t pretend I’ve not cried 10,000 tears and 1000 of them this morning because I love my LPM/LPL teams so much and I can’t even picture the other side without all of them in my constant life. But it is crucial that we make this transition not only for me in my aging but for them in their own vocations so they are set free with my blessing to pursue their next chapters. I love you guys. youtu.be/qSnCxc1V5fI

“It is discipleship beneath the cross that here becomes both the presupposition and the goal. (Hence Sermon on the Mount and cross [Paul] together, actually not really a problem).” Bonhoeffer, Finkenwald Lectures DBWE p476[264]

11 November 1941 | On a day celebrated in Poland as the Independence Day, the first execution by a shot in the back of the head at a close range using a small-calibre silent gun took place in the German Nazi Auschwitz concentration camp. It was done in the courtyard of Block 11, at the execution wall, also called “the Death Wall”. The condemned prisoners were led to the wall one by one, naked, with their hands tied behind. Before the execution each of the had his camp number written on the chest. The camp commandant, the camp manager and the camp doctor were present. The execution was performed by Rapportführer Gerhard Palitzsch. On that day the Germans shot most probably 76 people: 27 prisoners who were kept in the cells of Block 11 for different reasons and arrested there between October 10 and November 2, and 49 prisoners called from the camp by the Political Department – camp Gestapo. In their death certificates it said: ‘Erschiessung wegen Widerstand gegen die Staatsgewalt’ (shot because of resistance activity against the state authority). One of the executed was a sculptor and reserve lieutenant Tadeusz Lech. Captain Witold Pilecki mentioned him in his report written in 1945: „In the morning of November 11, 1941, colleague 42 approached me, and said: ‘I had a weird dream, I feel that they will blow me away today. Maybe it is a trifle, and yet, if nothing else, it makes me happy that I’ll die on November 11.’ Half an hour later his number was read out among others at the morning roll-call. He bid me a heartfelt farewell and asked me to tell his mother that he had died in good spirits.”

@JoyceDCave If it’s an official copy of the 1979 BCP they all have the same page numbering, regardless of size - which makes it a just a choice of physical page size and cover. Here’s the pew edition (but you may prefer a nicer cover): amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/089869…

I wrote a little book to help you pray with the Book of Common Prayer. I’d love it if you checked it out. Learning to pray with the BCP is not easy. So I wrote a guide to help you easily navigate collects, antiphons, canticles and more.

@owenmorgan Yes the 79 episcopal edition. It’s not quite as clear as “Common worship” from CofE

@emlybelz @DJBentley I’d be curious as to which of these were true. I’d always assumed it was named after Newark (in keeping with the using of GB names) but it was also apparently common to add “new” before the name. Eg.York. Newark creates a fascinating conundrum.

I learned today: 17th century Puritans established a town in NJ and named it New Ark of the Covenant …..later shortened to Newark.

@GHeathWhyte I gave a paper a while back at Tyndale on this. Paul is only embarrassed *if* we don’t realise that the cross has reconfigured his understanding of value/honour. Paul is rejecting a societal judgement on the cross and reforming it honourably around Jesus. pure.manchester.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles…

And yet, somehow, from a culture with presuppositions very different from our own, one that knew the horrors and revulsion of crucifixion first hand, Paul came to see Jesus' crucifixion as the only thing worth boasting about.

Speaking in Cambridge last week, @holland_tom made a claim about the apostle Paul that struck me as rather odd... 🧵

@AndrewRillera My grammar is awful in that post 🤦🏻‍♂️ I shouldn’t post on vacation! Haha But honestly, the book is excellent. Your argument stands, but your method is so valuable. How it models a better OT reading rather than a rejection seems more hospitable and theologically sound. Thank you.

This is excellent. @AndrewRillera has done something that the majority of books critiquing Penal Substitutionary Atonement fail to do - that is, critique the model without using what is essentially a reductionist or essentially “Marcionite”. And he’s made it readable too!
