@mattsutaaki @not_alive_irl For printed clear text tesseract is fine - for anything less legible or with data tables you want to preserve try something like mistral ocr, textract, or the biggest newest qwen you can run locally if you want to keep it on premise

@mattsutaaki @not_alive_irl Claude is the wrong tool. I used tesseract for ages but it sucks compared to a good ocr specific llm (they are different and designed for this task) at low temp.
Claude has the worst vision of any of the frontier labs and this isn't surprising.

friend asked claude to OCR it, and it straight up just made up its own interview instead, whole cloth. so glad my old boss was telling everyone at the university to do all "document conversion" including OCR with LLMs!

@cpudog @wassupnword I use a mirrored nvme for cache for that purpose plus everything is wired 10gbe fiber. Nice to have space tho!

@cpudog @wassupnword server stuff is mostly overkill for home storage I think and you can save a lot of power, heat, and noise by using enthusiast pc parts instead (provided the boards work with ECC ram)

@cpudog @wassupnword I avoid rack mount stuff. My main machine uses a lower power intel board but in a mATX case (I forget which) that had room for 8 mostly shucked 18TB drives. It's not cheap in power, but it's much cheaper than my old dual xeon server while also being faster and quieter

I recently turned off the Memory feature in Claude, found that with it the answers get too narrow, always indexing on what's in the memory, and it gets slightly sycophantic
