But the answer is not yes! Not yet.
We’re so far away from widespread cancellations being a real threat. In the short term (call it 3-6 months) we’re talking about cutting a daily frequency here and there, chopping a route into a small regional airport or a competitor’s stronghold.
And anything in/out of NYC & AUS is about as far down the list of potential cuts as one could get.

This goes beyond a differentiation without a difference, though.
Any cancellations would be motivated not by fares paid but just broader network changes. And airlines would be required to either put passengers on the next-best available flight or offer a refund.
Doesn't mean there won't be pain for customers if (and it's still an if) this all happens, but it wouldn't be on the scale of what you first suggested. And I say that as someone who is about as adversarial as it gets covering this industry.
