In undergrad, i spent a lot of time around people who cared a lot about climate, sustainability, impact investing and the like my b-school is like one of two in North America to have a full-blown major in sustainability; there was a lot of idea exchange by proximity. many went on to expensive master's at Imperial/Oxford/LSE overall, they spend too much time on side quests. i am talking UN SDG conferences, fellowships, and workshops. many ended up working in government/non-profit complex, in jobs that I consider to be a sink for otherwise high human capital. truly earnest people who are now paying off student loans in low-paying, and often low-impact, jobs while many were sincere - and their life choices aligned with their values (being vegan, not taking too many flights) - some outright built brands off their sustainability work and cashed them into further opportunities/foreign work trips without ever truly building anything I have now concluded that for many, there was sth fundamentally wrong with their worldview. It's too nihilistic/thinks of degrowth as an active solution. some of the most significant progress in recent years was delivered by people with an abundance mindset: think Tesla, Chinese EVs, clean energy, to name a few. much of the progress could be packaged as long-term supply chain resilience that made business/economic sense in the long term, like it did in this case we need more builders working on the wildest, boldest moonshot projects than people publishing policy papers that do not get read outside of conferences and student essays
