Compared to this point last year, Homicides in Denver are up 70%. That they’re not higher is a blessing of bad aim and the Herculean efforts of our local hospitals and EMS. 9news headlines their piece about a Five Points neighborhood meeting last night: “The community demands answers.” Did they get them? Nope. According to the article, residents heard from DPD that crime is down. Residents rightly pointed out that is a BS answer. Absent from the story and apparently the meeting was any discussion about WHY. Historically, these patterns—lots of shootings concentrated in a neighborhood, increased deaths—are linked to gangs and other criminal syndicates. Cops used to come into a neighborhood meeting and openly discuss the players and the issues. In 2017 DPD disbanded the Gang Unit, shifting to a community-based prevention strategy with officers and mental health professionals working with youth in DPS. Prevention is important, but I wonder if losing a unit that focused on gang investigations and arrests was a mistake and is handicapping DPD’s effectiveness. We’d know if we got information instead of obfuscation out of DPD.
