@LucyMsall @OrinKerr I don't disagree! My point wasn't that it's bad advertising (I actually say it's probably the opposite), but rather that the effect of the policy itself on access (as different than how effective the *advertising* is) may not match.

@OrinKerr I think that's the point I was trying to make - it's not flashy or good marketing, even if it's ultimately better policy to implement the goals the press release articulates. FWIW, we have ~30? years of data on sliding scales in tax relief policy wrt higher ed, if hard to parse.

@OrinKerr Yes, sliding scales are complex and difficult to figure out, require more complex forms, and require constant updating. But they also produce different incentives, likely much more closely aligned to the goals stated in the rest of the press release. (2/2)

No matter how many times we say this, there will be endless appetite for performative compliance in this fashion, solely as perceived liability transfer. At least until we have solid case precedent and board acceptance that this indeed has been a waste of time, money, and attention. In much the same way almost all of the things passed off as cyber hygiene are.

The end of Princeton's honor system, which was a real and ancient tradition, and a poll reporting that almost 30% of students admitted they had cheated, makes me sad. It is a marker of the degradation of our civil society, and the rotting of personal integrity.

Concerns about academic integrity have led the Princeton faculty to make a major change to the honor code: “All in-person examinations at Princeton will be proctored starting July 1, representing the most significant change to the honor system since it was established in 1893.” “The historic vote was the culmination of months of deliberation within the administration and student governing bodies about how to address increasing concerns over academic integrity violations, including the proliferation of AI usage.” “In The Daily Princetonian’s 2025 Senior Survey of over 500 seniors, 29.9 percent of respondents reported that they had cheated on an assignment or exam during their time at Princeton.”

It boggles the mind that supposed national security experts commenting on current matters in the Middle East are both unaware of the boghammer swarm threat scenario, nor the decades for which this was essentially the reference most likely fight for the naval surface warfare community. We’ve been ready for this since PRIME CHANCE in 1987, and have been openly discussing that history since EPIC FURY started.
