Thanks to @spybrary, I discovered ‘The Sandbaggers’, a brilliant British TV series (1978-80) about the inner workings of the espionage world, showing that the inner machinations within government keep SIS/MI6 almost as busy as adversaries do! Fabulous watch - highly recommend.
