An idea from PewDiePie’s recent video that resonated strongly with me is how insane it is that our current use of the internet implies unfiltered access to ourselves. Well, it does get filtered… but largely not by us, and even worse, by incentives that are often OPPOSED to our own. Programs like Adblock are a good first step. But as AI slop accelerates along its parabolic curve, other, more severe measures need to be taken too. Ideally, the internet becomes a blank canvas, containing only the information you truly want. (here is a screenshot of my youtube homepage no longer showing any recommended videos)

Always fascinated how people in the middle ages for hundreds of years just lived amongst the ever decrepitating Roman ruins. It was just a part of daily life for them.

if you go back and closely examine the artifacts of the internet of the early 90s, without exaggeration the IQ of the average user was probably 30 IQ points higher. it's like discovering atlantis or númenor, where all men are fair and noble and do not age.

Mass culture was definitely more intellectual until the invention of the radio or WWII or thereabouts. Just read a chapter of Gulliver's Travels dedicated to mocking Leibniz’s work in symbolic logic, and I find that alien enough that I can’t think of a workable modern analogy.

I like Germany because it’s conservative on paper, but there’s a lot more freedom there. 1.) you can drink at 16. 2.) you can have casino things in a gas station or bar, which is crazy. 3.) I’m pretty sure i can walk around with no bra and I’m not sure a German would care.

Was denkst du?

My kids are 11 and 12. I know this from direct experience, and also asking all their friends: - no interest in movie theaters - no interest in movies at home - no interest in TV shows Hollywood is dead.

@MorlockP Opera is niche, but still alive (and not going away). The same will be true for films or novel in the future. The mass will scroll ai slop, while a few nerds will still watch movies

Film was mass, going niche. Novels were mass, going niche. The world I loved has died, in so many ways, and it sucks. Old school hacking, old school startups, science fiction novels, heritage America ... it's all dead. I don't know what to do.
Rambo Van Halen@RamboVanHalen

Lots of comments about how to remake the film industry--and a lot of "build back better" type talk. Sorry you have to hear it from me, but film as a dominant cultural force is never coming back. But it's not going to go away either. It's going to stick around. Just like opera stuck around. At one time opera was mass entertainment. And then it faded and was replaced by other forms of mass entertainment--like movies. Today opera is a niche thing--reserved for the wealthy. But it still happens. Old operas are still being performed, and once in a while someone even writes a completely original opera. I think we can expect something similar from film. Niche film theaters will play old movies, and once in a while will play something new. But the days of everyone going to the movies on a Saturday night (or even streaming at home) is over. The new films won't be made for a mass audience--not like The Matrix or Starwars or Lord of the Rings or any of the other movies you love--because that mass audience is gone. And it's never coming back. Instead films will be made for a niche audience. And we're already there now. Marvel movies are made for a niche audience of beard neck fanboys, and Oscar bait movies are made for the NPR totebag and Volvo niche. What's going to take film's place? I have no idea. If I had to make a bet on the future of mass entertainment I'd go with anything live and in person. The faker (and gayer) the world gets, the more people will want authenticity. Stand up comedy is enjoying a resurgence--partly for this reason. As far as digital content goes, maybe it'll be gaming, or maybe vertical drama type shows. But who the fuck knows. It will probably be something that doesn't currently exist. But again, film will never go away entirely. Somewhere there are opera companies producing operas, Shakespeare festivals still happen, Greek plays still happen, and somewhere in the world somebody is putting on a Punch and Judy show. So film fans, don't despair. They'll be something for you. It might not be great, but it will be there. And I guess that's better than nothing🤷‍♂️ (Credit to my friend @DisgracedProp for the film/opera insight.)

When Europe panicked over the invasion of Ukraine, the US contributed $188 Billion, plus $66.9 Billion in hardware and military aid. That doesn't include intelligence and other support. When the US asked Europe if they wished to assist in the war in Iran, Europe said, "Not our illegal war." Ukraine wasn't ours either, but we at least showed up. I believe that the nations of the Middle East will remember who was there to protect them. Certainly, the US will remember who our friends truly are.

On the Strait of Hormuz we've gone from: 1. Don't need help 2. We need help 3. Why aren't folks helping? 4. Helps on the way 5. Not telling you who is helping 6. Helps not actually on the way but we don't need it anyway 7. We may just abandon it and leave it to everyone else

Historian here. I’m seeing a lot of crazy takes about the US and WWII. Nazi Germany declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941. This came just days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The US then declared war on Japan. Germany, as Japan’s ally (via the Tripartite Pact), chose to escalate and declare war on the U.S. But Adolf Hitler already saw the U.S. as an enemy and believed war was inevitable. So this whole narrative by some Americans to the Europeans of “help us now in Iran because we helped you in WWII” doesn’t quite stack up to the realities of history

"They didn't even bother to send us one or two tiny ships when we needed them", wird es dann nicht nur unter MAGA-Leuten heißen.

The real story about the NATO countries refusing to help the United States is not that they disagree with American policy. In fact, they’re very happy we’re eliminating Iran as a threat. They’re just afraid of all the Muslims they let in, so they won’t say it out loud. The real story, however, is the fact that they don’t have a military that’s capable of performing the mission. So next time some geebo from Denmark starts crowing about how they turned down their NATO ally, ask them what ship they could deploy to the Persian Gulf within one week that could conduct those operations. And you will never get an answer because the answer is none.
