Before a viewer clicks on a YouTube video, there are a lot of things that influence their decision-making process. Optimize for each, and you’ll get a lot more views. Here are 10 important factors that influence clickability: 1. Thumbnail: This is where everything starts. The thumbnail is one of the most obvious elements that a viewer will look at when seeing something appear on their feed. A perfect thumbnail has aesthetic appeal, has recognizable elements related to the interests of a viewer, and is clear in what it’s trying to present. 2. Title: Another obvious one, but important nonetheless. Behind each title sits an idea. An idea that is presented through a topic written in a certain title format. Then we often use adjectives to increase the emotional value of the title. Note that there’s a lot more to a title than this, but at least it gives you an idea. That’s why we talk about “Millions of views ideas only.” 3. Video length: Another obvious one is video length. Length matters more than people think. Different audiences have different preferences. Some want quick 2-minute summaries, others want full 30-minute breakdowns. If someone is on their lunch break, they’re less likely to click a 40-minute video. You need to understand your niche and what kind of investment your audience is willing to make. 4. The age of content (upload timing): Humans have a novelty bias. This means that we are more likely to engage and interact with videos that are newer. The biggest opportunity here is to understand this concept and think: maybe that video you made 4 years ago could be recreated with your new understanding of your audience and better quality. 5. Amount of views (social proof): Now we’re getting into the more nuanced ones. It’s not just title and thumbnail. Views also matter. Viewers are constantly judging whether a video is “worth it” by comparing how many people have already watched it. If one video has 5 million views and another on the same topic has 200k, most people will choose the one with 5 million. Numbers tell the viewer it is worth their time. You should consider this when you decide on an idea to figure out whether social proof is important or not for that topic. 6. Familiarity with the creator: Who uploaded the video matters as well. A familiar face builds trust. If someone had a good experience with a previous video from a creator, they’re more likely to trust them again. That recognition makes the decision easier, especially if they had a good experience with this creator in the past. 7. Autoplay (Content Teaser): Autoplay is the most forgotten element that influences a viewer’s decision-making process when choosing to watch a video or not. The good thing about autoplay, in comparison to thumbnails and titles, is that it’s harder to manipulate in a way that can convince a viewer to click on your video or not. It’s a piece of information that quickly gives insight about the actual content of a video. My advice is to think about your initial video seconds and ask if they reflect what the viewer may expect from the content. Now let’s get to some of the unobvious ones. 8. The amount of times a thumbnail has been shown to a person: Sometimes people don’t click the first time, or the second. But the fifth time YouTube shows it to them. The more times a video shows up on someone’s homepage, the more familiar it becomes. The algorithm is testing different moments to serve it, depending on mood, time of day, and behavior. Sometimes the 5th impression is when they finally click. While you cannot necessarily influence this, it’s something good to understand for when you’re concerned when a video doesn’t instantly perform. Some videos just take longer to get someone to click. 9. Which other videos are recommended next to yours: If your video is next to a massive creator with the same topic, you are losing this fight. But if your video is next to weaker competition or random content, the chances of getting more clicks are higher. Again, a factor that is hard to influence, but something to consider. At the end of the day, you’re competing for the attention of a viewer just as much as the next creator. The more confident YouTube is in your content, the more likely they will suggest your content. But also, the more likely you are to get views over your competitors. 10. Where your videos are shown: We’ve mainly talked about factors related to when they see your content on the home page. But the final factor touches on where they see your content. This may influence how they perceive your content as well. The way your video reaches someone changes how they perceive it. Browse, suggested, subscription feed, search, they all have different viewer behavior. You’ll see this clearly in your YouTube analytics. Metrics on every traffic source are different. All in all, there’s many factors that influence a click, much more than just the title and thumbnail.

Everyone can create good and valuable content online. If you're credible and experienced: Give advice, and share wild stories. If you're new to the journey, young, and inexperienced: Do interesting experiments, and tell your own lessons from them.
