Took this photo while on the way from Somnath to Vadodara… On the shores of Prabhas Patan, the Somnath Temple stands tall as a radiant symbol of devotion, history and civilisational spirit. It has outlasted barbaric attacks, invasions and the passage of centuries. It is eternal. Somnath gives every Indian strength, courage and hope. Har Har Mahadev!

Indians should stop using “South/North India.” It should be: “southern/northern” India. “south/north” Indian state(s). No capitalization for north/south either. Be the change to change the narrative.

@WSJopinion @avatans Finally, you allowed a Hindu voice in the Houses of worship column. Hope you continue this balance going forward! Kudos @avatans for pointing out a critical lack in the religious discourse - the voice of non-proselytizing religions, the largest of them being Hinduism.

Major religions like Hinduism—the world’s third-largest faith—are excluded from human-rights discourse, international bodies and religious-freedom monitoring organizations. This asymmetry needs to be addressed, writes @avatans on.wsj.com/4dvYn9b

NEW: Students go nuts after donor announces during his commencement speech that he is paying off all of their senior year debts. Anil Kochhar and his wife decided to give the gift to all ~200 graduates in N.C. State's family. Kochhar is the son of Prakash Chand Kochhar, an immigrant from India who studied textile manufacturing in Raleigh. "My father found not just an education, but an opportunity that allowed him to build a life, support his family, and begin a legacy that continues today. And it will never stop, never," Kochhar said.

I was 16 when my 18-year-old brother got married. I remember one night we were all at my mom’s house for dinner. My new sister-in-law was making herself a plate and, trying to be a good wife, she started making one for my brother too. He didn’t ask her to. He wasn’t expecting it. He didn’t even know she was doing it. Before she could hand it to him, my mom quietly pulled her aside. She told her to put the plate back. Then she said, “He has two perfectly good hands. If you start doing this now, he’ll expect it for the rest of your life.” My sister-in-law looked surprised, but she listened. My brother got up a few minutes later and........

I have recently come to learn and understand why this is so patently offensive to Hindus. It is exactly this sort of attitude and comment that will make Indian Americans, as a small but influential community in the United States, feel alienated and, for lack of a better term, "outcast." They won't tolerate or stand for it. Unless you are on a clandestine mission to throw the midterm elections to the Democrats in their entirety, immediate outreach is required. The only "conversions" the Hindus I've come to know are for those who practice other religions, including Christians, is to change their views and treatment of Hindus. Like everyone else, they just want to be left alone to work hard, raise their families in peace and prosperity, and contribute how and when they can to their communities and this nation. Heed these words. God lives in all of us. TRUTH.

Vivek is Hindu. He doesn’t hide it – obviously. I hope and pray Vivek comes to a saving knowledge of Christ & sees that He is the ONLY way - superior beyond measure to idols that “cannot see or hear or walk.” That being said, I hope Christians share the Gospel with him in earnest and in person. Many are acting in very bad faith (no pun intended), trying to use his religion against him politically while having very little concern for his actual soul.

@sahaniLBS1989 Horrible. What is wrong with these girls that they sink so low? That said, how can a university prevent this happening within a private space? They can and should definitely expel the perps to show their completely intolerance for such behavior. A police case may be helpful too.

@NinaPanickssery I was thankful my parents and in-laws helped with childcare the first few years. And it will be a privilege for me to do the same for my kids. But yes, sometimes, it can be tiring for grandparents so some sensitivity is needed.

Genuinely curious—why don’t more people use their own parents/kid’s grandparents for childcare as opposed to daycare/preschool/nannies (which seem more common)? Is it common for boomer grandparents to show disinterest in their grandchildren?

Why do a few well educated Indians abroad have 3 kids?? 3 kids one after the other, and not just an older child and younger twins. I already know 4 families with 3 kids each..... And none of them are filthy rich, they just went abroad via the usual channels and earning just like loads others. And it's nothing to do with wanting a male child. Infact all 4 families have sons as their first child. The couples are currently in their 40s and kids are into their teenage years. What is the secret that these people are privy to and that we don't know in India, that makes them want to have 3 kids? Here, in India, even well educated, well earning people don't want to have kids at all or don't want to have a second kid. All I can think is that they wanted a home filled with kids.... Loads of well educated Caucasians voluntarily have more than 2 kids abroad. #Children

Before modern multinational banks reached Southeast Asia, merchants from 75 villages in Tamil Nadu had already built a transnational financial system. They financed rice in Burma, rubber in Malaya, retail in Singapore, plantations in Ceylon — connected not by contracts but by kinship and reputation. This is the story of the Chettiars.🧵

One of the most magical things about India is the wildlife. I still cannot believe my eyes when I drive from town to town. On my drive to Monkey Temple in Jaipur, this is what the road looked like. It’s not uncommon to see dogs, cows, & tons of monkeys in the streets of India.

Honestly, as someone who has traveled a lot, India is the best country I have ever traveled to. It’s incredible. I will have been here for 9 days when I leave, and there is still so much to see and do. My experience has been amazing and India is portrayed negatively in the media as a place Amercians should avoid, but I realize a lot of that is completely made up. The people, food, culture and hospitality culture are just incredible. I have felt safe and comfortable the entire time I have been here and India will truly be the next big super power. This country has incredible potential and you have to see it yourself to understand because the media only makes it out to be 3rd world. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Indian people are the nicest people I have ever met. I am very grateful for my time in India. I have enjoyed it so much and I hope I can come back every year. Next time I want to visit South India. I have tried to do as much as possible these last 9 days but there is still so much to see and do. All good things come to an end. I’ll be back (hopefully soon). I love India. My misconceptions have been corrected. I have nothing but nice things to say. 🇮🇳
