If the United States truly thinks about withdrawing from NATO, then European security will be based solely on the European Union. But not in its current form. I think that the EU is in a situation where it needs more countries. The UK, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Norway. These are four strong countries, which are part of Europe. Together, the UK, Ukraine, and Türkiye have armies that are stronger than Russia's army. Without Ukraine and Türkiye, Europe can’t match Russia. With the four countries on board you can wrest control of the seas, have secure skies and the largest land forces. It’s not about offense, because when Russia makes the decision to have an army of 2.5 million people by 2030, Europe has to think about security and how to preserve its independence. The UK once was a member of the EU. There are concerns about agriculture when it comes to Türkiye. But you can manage all of this if you have a really great economy. Whatever one thinks of Turkey's broader strategic posture, it has been serious about acquiring a diverse range of deep-strike capabilities, and that investment appears to be paying off (though getting a full picture of ongoing programs and their current status remains difficult). Admittedly, these weapons have never been used under operational conditions, and warfighting performance is another question. Still, Turkey has at least laid a very strong foundation to build on in the coming years.

America 🇺🇸 offered Turkey 🇹🇷 to join the EEC twice, together with Greece 🇬🇷 (to the Ecevit government) and with Spain 🇪🇸 and Portugal 🇵🇹 (to the Demirel government). Ecevit refused it flatly. At that point he preferred the Soviets, but after the coup he eventually felt guilty for this decision for the rest of his life. Demirel let the Parliament answer the offer. He thought he could Teflon away from it. The Turkish Parliament responded with a memorable 231-2 vote against, censuring Erkmen, the foreign minister who brought them the offer, on the grounds that he: "followed a policy contrary to national interests, attempted to enter the European Economic Community, and pursued a pro-Western policy against the Islamic World". Verbatim. The tanks rolled shortly afterwards.
