What kills me about this is that the DPRK has had ICBMs that can reach the mainland US for a decade now. Nothing happened. The scariest case to map this threat onto is one that already exists, has had zero effect on any American's life, and if anything has made the world more stable.

Marco Rubio on Iran: They were aiming to become the next North Korea — not a North Korea run by a regime that is troublesome and hard to understand, but an Iran run by radical Shia clerics with intercontinental missiles.

I've written about this in the past, but there is a deep incoherence to the trajectory of NATO expansion. The Baltics are military deadweight that would be almost impossible to contest in a war with Russia. From a pure military calculus, giving the Baltics membership both increased the exposure to a war with Russia and made the prospects in that war worse. Adding the Baltics to NATO makes sense only if you believe in the strongest sort of NATO deterrence, where you can just roll the deterrent umbrella eastward at no cost. You wouldn't want the Baltics in NATO if you think a war is actually plausible. At the same time, NATO's stance in Ukraine implies that they believe in a weak or eroding deterrent, as seen in the myriad European statements concerning the risk of a broader war with Russia after the conclusion of the conflict in Ukraine. NATO doesn't seem to know if it's a bloc with strong or weak deterrent. It's expanded recklessly to include members that compromise the defensibility of its eastern perimeter, which implies strong deterrence. At the same time, the war in Ukraine has created a sense of panic and impending conflict, which implies weak deterrence. If you believe your deterrence is flagging, you would never in a million years want to be linked to the Baltics, which are both indefensible and dangerous flashpoints on the Russian border.

Iran respects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and considers it a brotherly nation. Our operations are aimed at enemy aggressors who have no respect for Arabs or Iranians, nor can provide any security. Just look at what we did to their aerial command. High time to eject U.S. forces.

Not a fan of the development that Finland and the Baltic states have stopped denying that they let the Ukrainian military use their airspace. It has happened throughout the war, but as of very recently it has become more common and they publicly acknowledge it. Bad things ahead

Russian tanker "Anatoly Kolodkin", carrying around 730,000 barrels of crude, has reached Cuba, breaking the American oil blockade. The Kremlin commented that "Russia considers it her duty to render the necessary assistance to our Cuban friends". The US decided not to interfere.

At this point the Russians could occupy the Baltic States - they have a casus belli and it would take about a weekend - and NATO would write them a strongly worded letter for lack of munitions. Probably no coincidence Iran got actionable pinpoint intelligence on an AWACS though.

Estonians post video clearly demonstrating that Ukrainian drones are attacking Russia via their territory. A very very dangerous game is being played. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

🇷🇺🇨🇺 The Russian oil tanker "Anatoly Kolodkin" carrying ~730,000 barrels of crude has entered Cuba's Exclusive Economic Zone. The vessel went through the US Naval blockade as agreed between Moscow and Washington. This is the country's first major oil delivery in over 3 months.

The only possible exit plan for a ground war that could work is to topple the regime and replace it with a puppet. But then that would require winning a protracted counterinsurgency war. This is not possible given the required force-to-population ratio. It would need 40-60 divisions when the US can field only 10-15 even with a draft. US casualties in a counterinsurgency war will be horrendous. Meanwhile, Iran would’ve destroyed most gulf energy and water infrastructure, pushing the world economy into a Great Depression. A ground war is a recipe for a vastly bigger disaster than the one they have already plunged us in.

Ground operations, as described by @DanLamothe, suffer from a serious what then problem. The purpose of a possible invasion is to reopen the Strait. If ground forces are successful in that, what then? (1/n)

We’re now a full month into Operation Epic Fury. None of the stated objectives have been accomplished. The Iranian regime is intact and there is no discernible unrest in Iran’s cities. Iran continues to strike Israel and the gulf states, and they are hitting extremely valuable American assets like AWACS and tankers. The US is accumulating more assets, including additional carrier groups and a stream of accumulating ground forces. Iran has clearly taken a tremendous beating and their leadership group has been severely hollowed out, but they are still in the field and it would be naive to pretend that this is all going according to plan.

Iranian military spokesman claims that they hit "a depot of anti-drone systems related to Ukraine, which was present in Dubai to assist the US army and where 21 Ukrainians were also present". He further added that "the fate of the Ukrainian forces present at the mentioned location, who are probably killed, is unknown".

🇷🇸 UEFA has fined Red Star Belgrade €95,500 for displaying a mosaic of Jesus Christ with the words "Let our faith lead you to victory" during a match. UEFA called it "inappropriate for a sporting event" that "undermines the reputation and integrity of football." Pride flags, political messaging, and rainbow armbands are actively promoted. A cross is a fine.
