I’m about to get married, and my fiancé knows I have an inheritance that was left to me by my grandparents. It’s in my name only, and I’ve been saving it for years. Mayor Mamdani stood in front of the Citizens Budget Commission last night — a room full of people who oppose taxing the wealthy — and said it anyway. Tax the ultra-rich. End the state’s drain on the city. Make those with the most do more for those with the least. He didn’t soften it for the audience. Here’s the reality he was describing: Trump’s federal cuts are gutting healthcare, food assistance, housing, and transit. That need doesn’t disappear. The bill just gets pushed down onto working people — while the Epstein class collects an enormous tax handout from the same administration. Cities like New York are being forced to absorb the cost of a federal government that is actively looting the country. Mamdani is calling it what it is. In rooms that don’t want to hear it. That’s what real leadership looks like.
