Today, I woke up very early and excited heading to Huduma Centre because I thought today might just be the day that I finally held a driver's licence. Don't get me wrong, in my 30 years of life, I have attended 3 driving schools, passed 2 driving tests, owned 2 cars but strangely I have never held my driver's licence. I can't tell if it's my luck or the system that I was born into. My younger brother who happens to be 10 years younger than me held his drivers licence before I ever held mine. Allow me to tell you the story: First driving school (2014): Pettans driving school. This school was advertising everywhere back in the day, but I wish they spent that money on the quality of the education they give. Because by the time I was done with the course I was very confident that I knew nothing about driving and taking a test would be foolish so I just skipped it. Second driving school (2016): 2 years later I decided to try again of course in another institution, I can't quite remember the name. However the classes were better and I learnt something. I even did and passed the test. However on the day of collecting the licence we went to the police headquarters only to be told "the NTSA system is being introduced. All licences have been sent there. Go follow up with your school". I followed up for a whole year, until it was clear that my licence was lost. 🥲 Driving school 3 (2019/20): 3 years after, this was right after college, I had some free time thanks to youth unemployment in Kenya so I decided to try again. 3rd time's the charm right? Everything went well, I passed with flying colours. On the month of finally collecting my licence the news was "we are currently in lockdown, all government offices are CLOSED!" 1 year later after life started getting back to normal I tried following up to no success. It slowly dawned on me, I had lost another licence. Anyway I opted to just driving without one and giving police officers my sad story every time they asked. On the system it shows that I am licenced. Last year however, it was time to renew my invisible licence, which I did. And I got a message last year to collect at the Huduma Centre. Today was the folks, although a renewal, I was to finally get my licence. "Yvonne, you don't seem to have taken a photograph, take one there and come back after a month." 😳😳
