@MaxRink @guincodes In an idealistic world, I agree. I just don't see it happening anytime soon, especially in the US, so I'll keep my low cost of living compared to overpaying for a tiny apartment in any of the US cities with infrastructure

@detiber @guincodes So yeah, IMO we as a society need to make it unattractive to move counyside just because you want to, it's not good for society in general

when I talk about how cars are bad and how we should have trains, why do people always trot out “butbutbut life in a small village?” I don’t live in a village. Neither do most of you! Cars don’t work in cities; stop changing the topic.

@guincodes Would I love to be able to ditch (most) of the cars we own? Yes. At one point we were down to a single car, but after a run-in with a deer and repairs taking longer than rental coverage paid for, we realized that we at least needed a backup vehicle.

@guincodes If the trip is drivable in a day or two, the cost savings of having a personal vehicle is much less than train or plane tickets for 5, paying for a rental, or ride shares/taxis needed at the destination.

@pjausovec @virtualized6ix In our society there is no such thing as a self-made billionaire, their wealth is only possible by using public infrastructure and extracting value from customers, employees, suppliers, contractors, governments, etc.

@pjausovec @virtualized6ix Most of all, try not to sacrifice your values, morals, and ethics along the way. At this point in my life, I seriously question if it's even possible to amass a billion dollars as an individual without exploiting the people that made it possible.

@pjausovec @virtualized6ix All I will say is, make sure you are looking out for your own mental health and personal interests, because hardly anyone else will. Make sure the hustle is benefiting yourself more than it is enriching others. The glorification of hustle culture generally results in the latter.

@detiber @virtualized6ix its not, but it’s definitely a factor. i am not advocating for non-stop work - everyone can decide for themselves how they want to spend their weekends without expecting the same for others

@virtualized6ix I doubt there are many people at the end of their life regretting the time they wasted not working, it's generally the opposite, regretting not taking the opportunity to live, to be in the moment with the people they love.

@virtualized6ix It's funny how many people fall into the trap of hustle culture. Obviously it can be advantageous to creating new opportunities for yourself, but it's not sustainable in the long run. Do people really think the billionaires promoting hustle culture actually work nonstop?
